macbook pro 2014 torx size

I just bought a Macbook Pro 13". I am installing a Samsung SSHD. What size torx screw driver do I need to take off the bottom. I have down to a T5 but I need one small than that.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

If you have an Apple store near you, use them as a resource. The genius bar technicians are trained by Apple to work on Apple products and all evaluations are FREE. Some are better than others but not one would have suggested installing a SSHD. I'm sure that some of the Best Buy employees are competent, but approach what they advise with caution.

Good luck. 🙂

I looked at the iFixit website for a 2014 13"MBP and there were installation instructions and a number questions and answers, which confirmed my prior statement that PCIe SSDs are still not available from third party sources.

You might be able to pickup one from a water damaged MBP on e-bay, but not a new one. I suppose you could try Apple but I have doubts that they would sell you one and if they did, you bank account would be hit hard.

THanks, but the bottom is held by 10 extremely small torx screws, not Phillips. The 2014 MBP Is completely different.

The bottom panel on a retina MBP is held by Pentalobe screws, not Torx, a proprietary format by Apple. The driver can be purchased on Amazon.

When you mentioned the SSHD, that prompted my initial response, but when i noticed the retina MBP, then that resulteded in my alteration. If you have a 2014 MBP, there currently are no SSD upgrades available from third party sources.

Ah! They did look a little different. As for the SSD, I guess I'll unload it on Ebay at a loss. Actually I did find a third party 1TB with the right form factor but it was $950! My only recourse is to get Bestbuy to let me exchange up to the 512GB MBP. They're the ones that suggested that I buy the 128GB and then buy the Samsung SSHD. Of course, they didn't know what they were talking about. He had done that upgrade to his own but before Apple redesigned the MBP and I didn't know any better. Fortunately I didn't have right tool and couldnt open the MBP! Thanks for your help!

Nearest Apple store is 40 miles. Yes, they are top notch and I always trust them.

However, I went to my seller and they took complete ownership of the issue after I showed them the ifixit.com page. (they were flabbergasted and embarrassed). They cheerfully took my 128GB back and let me upgrade to the 512GB. Amazon is refunding my $600 for the SSHD. All is well and as I speak I'm installing Yosemite on my new MBP! Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers,

Dick Draper
