I just found out recently that if you're turning down the transparency on 10.10 via system settings -> Accessibility -> Display your HUD elements (brightness & loudness) will have ugly black corners with square edges. Nice GUI flub.

I met the same problem and these black corners are driving me mad.
Maybe only way to solve this is to uncheck Reduce Transparency. Hope Apple can see this thread.
I was also having this issue. I just restarted and it seems to be fixed now.

I'm having the same problem, the black corners on the edge of the usually rounded corners of the volume and brightness HUDs, which seems to be caused by the reduced transparency, however, restarting the computer does not resolve the issue.

I like the black corners while Transparency is active or inactive....simply the finest...would not have it any other way....sends my eyes to the center of what is important....>sad<
The update to 10.10.1 did not fix this bug either.... 😟
