QT plugins that crash FCP 5.1.2

OK... here are the known QT codecs that crash FCP 5.1.2 at startup:

These are found in /Library/Quicktime/

On2V3
TSCC
X_Vid
Avid codecs

G5 Quad 2.5Ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.7), 6GB RAM, NVidia 7800 GT OEM

I'm running the older Avid codecs without any problems... but the newer codecs crashed other machines.

Also... for some of our machines the SHEER CODEC seemed to also crash FCP 5.1.2... but other machines running the same version of Sheer had no problems at all.

Go figure.

Sounds like there is some type of flawed QT plugin scanning/authenticating routine in 5.1.2

So does this mean that those of us who have both Avid and FCP on the same system are SOL?

Since Avid and Apple LOVE talking to one another about compatibility...I would think that 5.1.2 and Avid on the same system would be bad. Although I heard one person mention that they reinstalled the codecs after they removed them and they worked...but that sounds dubious. Don't go to 5.1.2 if you have Avid software on your computer.

(one a side note, I wonder when Brummel is gonna call us...?)

I don't think it is specific, but rather overall. Here is the LAFCPUG FAQ on that:

http://www.lafcpug.org/phorum/read.php?11,153270,154962#msg-154962

NOW...what is causing me to crash is the FXPlugins. I see them, and when I drag them onto a clip in the timeline...Boink! FCP crashes. I tried three different filters with the same effect. I won't try a fourth.

Is it crashing immediately on startup?... or is it crashing when it tries to load your project?

If it's crashing on startup... then it's likely a QT plugin problem.... I recommend moving all the plugs out of the folder... restart FCP and see if it crashes then. If it doesn't... then force quit FCP and slowly reintroduce the QT plugs until you find the culprit.

I'm pretty sure this is an FCP scanning/authenticating plugin process error. Hopefully they will find a fix for this el pronto.

These are the plugins I have currently sitting in my /Library/Quicktime/ folder and FCP DOES work with these installed:

3ivx D4 4.5.1. for OSX
AC3MovieImport.component
AppleHDVCodec.component
AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AvidAVDJCodec.component (05/01/02-version 9.4.2)
AvidAVUICodec.component (05/01/02-version 9.4.2)
Blackmagic Codec.component
Blackmagic RT Color Correction.component
Blackmagic RT Dissolves.component
Blackmagic RT Image Control.component
CanonMJPEGAVI
DesktopVideoOut.component
DivX 6 Decoder.component
DivX Encoder.component
DVCPROHDCodec.component
DVCPROHDMuxer.component
DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component
FCP Uncompressed 422.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
Flix Flv.component
Flix Swf.component
IMXCodec.component
KinomaExporter.component
lame 3.92.shlb
LAMEEncoder.component
LiveType.component
Media 100 Transcoder.component
Microcosm Decode.component
Microcosm Encode.component
Motion.component
MP3.component
OsirX Broadcasting.component
RealMediaExporter.component
SheerVideo™ HD Pro.component
Sorenson Video Pro OSX.qtx

Now.... on two of our machines we were unable to get FCP 5.1.2 to run with the same version of Sheer codec installed.

I also want to note that I did restart FCP once after it running without problems and I had to remove all my codecs... restart FCP.... kill FCP... move my codecs back into the Quicktime folder and then it worked fine.

I put the dates on the Avid codecs to let you know which ones I know are working.

As far as I know all other codecs listed are up to date.

I can't really change what is installed as far as Avid goes. I need to leave all of the codecs intact if I want to continue to use my Avid software. The ones listed are what installed from the AXP 4.8.4 installer. I'm considering upgrading that to Media Composer software, so I would hate to lose my ability to use Avid by upgrading FCP.

Maybe this will be fixed with a 5.1.3 release??
