Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad). It is a sporadic issue. Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response. I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard. Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard. Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina. When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue? Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

I'm still watching this thread with interest, even though I solved the problem for myself by going back to Mavericks.

My frustration level has dropped 100%.... 🙂

I guess we sufferers are a small minority of Yosemite users, probably way less than 1% and there must be bigger bugs (with a larger number of affected) to fix before they get around to this one.

Whatever the problem is, it *must* be fixable by a change to our settings or what we have installed, it *must* be something unique to *our* (common) setups otherwise the problem would be far more widespread.

(Or is it widespread but on-one is noticing it? I doubt it...)

IMHO it's really just a matter of coming up with the one combination of things in common that we all have running.

The odds are against us though - there are probably 100 billion combinations of software/hardware/settings.

Do we actually know for 100% certain that the problem can occur on a brand new out of the box Mac?

If that is the case then that would be the best starting point to eliminate the problem.

My guess is that it doesn't happen with a brand new Mac with a base Yosemite install, untouched, out of the box, it has to be a change of setting or additional software or a combo of both.

i had an odd moment with apple, but the short version: i got, on my macbook pro (late 2011), a new logic board, new ram, a new SSD...even a new keyboard/trackpad. THEN i did a virgin install of 10.10.1. not long after...mail lag. which continued thru the 10.10.2 beta, then a reinstall of 10.10.1...and now 10.10.2. so what i know for a fact is...very little. everything i've tried has not fixed this....

I the idea that the mouse has anything to do with it is quite interesting, but I know it has nothing to do with a USB mouse as I kept my old USB mouse and used it a bit when I bought my new 5K retina iMac. It came with a wireless mouse. When the lag first started, I thought it might be the new wireless mouse so I used the old one. No change. I have read every single forum reply associated with this problem and indeed nothing works so far. I have erased my drive twice, set up a new user, and still nothing. I don't want to use a new email app, and yet here I am cursing, every time the lag happens. I guess the one good thing to come of this is I write less emails. I hear the voice of Steve Jobs in my head saying "It Just Works".

I patiently await hope from the Mothership.

are all of us folks who have a LOT of old mail? During my reindexing effort yesterday (which made no difference) I learned that I have around 325,000 old messages.

Short of reindexing, I didn't find a way to get a count of stored emails in a quick google search.

For me, user/Library/Mail is 3.78 GB on disk for 37,896 items.

Sounds like big numbers, but they didn't increase that much since last fall when Yosemite was released and I first noticed the type-display delay.

The issue is not limited to external keyboards or mice. As others have posted, the same problem exists with the built-in keyboards on various MacBook models, including my 2011 MBPro. Also although many posters mentioned the spinning beach ball, I didn't see one until yesterday after installing the most recent Yosemite update. There is also a thread at MacInTouch, written by folks whose names I don't recognize from our forum here

Something that I haven't yet seen in this forum is what happens after the hang occurs:

I guess that some of us are skilled hunt and peck typists who look down at the keyboard as we type and only peripherally at the text which froze several keystrokes earlier. That would make this problem especially vexing because not only is time wasted but sometimes the thought itself.

As a touch typist, however, I watch the screen as I input text and am able to stop as soon as the lag begins. When I stop before a couple of letters beyond what shows on screen, I am able to wait for the letters I've input to appear on the screen and continue typing. However, if I stop typing too long after the hang begins, the letters I input do not appear and I have to go back to where the text stopped appearing and re-enter it.

Count me among those who days ago posted at the Apple Feedback page to describe the problem in detail, including that my problem is with Apple's integral keyboard and trackpad on my MBP. I plan to post again with this additional observation about typists and hope that it won't be ignored as a duplicate of my original feedback post. /e/

I have had this problem for several months on a 2012 Mac Mini with external Apple keyboard. I tried something that has fixed it for me but lost the caps lock function in doing so. Go to Accessibility/Keyboard and check "Enable Slow Keys". Then under Options, move the delay to short. This has been working for me now for several weeks. BTW I am using 10.10.2.
