Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

So I know that the new OS 10.10.3 fixes the lag problem, but I'm still using 10.10.2. I have been struggling with this problem for months. When I first talked to an Apple support person, they suggested I erase the drive and then bring back my data via Time Machine. After that experience, it still did not fix the lag.

Last week I got so fed up with the problem that I erased the drive again but this time made sure not to import any data back via Time Machine. I backed up everything using Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine. Knowing that I did not want to bring back any setting from Mail, I saved all my emails using an app called Email Archiver Pro, which just makes PDF files of your mail. I then erased the drive and re-created my email accounts from scratch. I have two. One personal and one for work. I then slowly installed every app and then I opened my external where my Time Machine files are and simply dragged specific folders and data. Since then, I have not had any lag in Apple Mail. It's been this way for a week now and I've been writing lot's of emails since I'm a teacher, and have yet to encounter any slowness or lag in Mail. Previous to my clean install, I seemed to have Mail suck up a lot of memory and made the machine slow.

sounds like a lot of work. why not just have used the 'slow keys' workaround? still, glad you got it sorted. 10.10.3 should be soon, and, just in case: "slow keys"...

For me, as apparently for many others, removing the markup icon from the “new message” window has resolved the problem, all is well now.

Very strange - I have no 'mark-up' icon in the new message window, never have had and I can't even find this option in the customise toolbar options...

BUT whatever, 10.10.3 has fixed the problem for me...

here too, no markup icon there either. and again, 10.10.3 fixes it. anyway, still mysterious, but at least fixed!

The "Markup" icon can be added to the new message window by choosing "Customize Toolbar..." from the View menu.

Interestingly, I'm 99% sure I had the Markup icon showing on new messages in Mail on 10.10.2 but notice it's not there by default in the 10.10.3 beta.

An interesting test would be to add it back in 10.10.3 and see if the lag comes back... any volunteers?

i didn't have the icon there previously, but added it when i installed the 10.10.3 beta...so it's definitely not an issue (not here, anyway)...

Interesting that on my system 10.10.2 the markup icon was always "greyed out". I never knew what it was anyway so I took it out and unchecked "enable slow keys" and so far no typing lag.

Removing the Markup Tool Box did not solve the problem. Back to using the "enable slow keys" until I can get 10.10.3,

This is very odd.

For me, removing the Markup toolbox has definitely and reliably removed the lag.

Also, as a bonus effect, Mail doesn’t crash any more when adding or removing the Bcc Adress field …

Looks like Apple released 10.10.3 to the public this morning.

Nevermind- my bad. The release this morning was the next version of the 10.10.3 beta. Sorry If I got anyone's hope up...

Still early but it seems to have solved it for me too.

If only we had found this out half a year ago (or Apple would have fixed it).

I wouldn't consider the Mail type-display bug a "major usability bug." There were some of those in the early betas, and they got squashed. And it apparently doesn't affect everyone using Yosemite (maybe because it's caused by the Markup icon being in the compose window). And it popped up not during the betas, but only in the release version.

Also, look on the bright side. Maybe Apple will not release 10.11 next fall. 🙂
