Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad). It is a sporadic issue. Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response. I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard. Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard. Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina. When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue? Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

Clearly not all Yosemite users have this issue (or there would be a LOT more people on this thread).

I'm not so sure about that, Kirk. for a number of reasons:

  • I think that e-mail users are declining in number as people turn to social media.
  • For me, it is only noticeable after a few lines of text have been entered (this could be a time rather than text factor) and quicker typists or those typing short e-mails might not experience the bug.
  • It took me 20 years before I could type without constantly looking at the keyboard so many people could be more focussed on the keyboard than the screen.
  • Not everybody who has noticed it will be as bugged about it as us.
  • Not everybody who has noticed it will be registered, or even know about, these forums.

Does anybody know of anybody who has Yosemite installed who doesn't have this bug? It might be worth comparing notes with them.

I think it has been mentioned here before, but the brand new Mac mini I have at work, that shipped with 10.10 does not seem to be exhibiting the problem. I haven't actually spent a lot of time emailing on it yet. But all of my data that's on there we migrated from 10.8. My MBP was running 10.9 when I upgraded to 10.10 (not beta). This may be anecdotal, but the horrible laggy text issue "may" be related to the 10.9 to 10.10 upgrade/migration path. It nearly makes Mail unusable and I'm still typing in TextEdit for anything more than a sentence to two.

Sigh...

glad i found this thread. this JUST started happening to me last week, a lag in typing in apple mail. have tried a myriad of fixes, with no results. (am on a 13" 2011 macbook pro, running 10.10.1). i DO have the plugin 'mailunreadmenu' running... but have never had this issue until last week.

will keep an eye on this discussion. frustrating (altho perhaps? apple's way of forcing us to think more about what we're writing?) 😉

Hi All,

I work for AgileBits, makers of 1Password. I've seen 1Password mentioned in this thread a couple of times now and am keeping an eye on things here as a result. As far as I have seen we have not had any reports of this coming into our support channels. If you are finding 1Password to be causing issues we would really appreciate it if you could get in touch so we can try to look into it. Likewise, if you're seeing it happen with multiple applications let us know which other applications as well so we can try to figure out if there's a common thread between the two.

I'll do my best to jump in here if I see anything concrete or learn anything. But as of now I have not yet spoken to any customers experiencing this issue so I have nothing more to give besides we'd be interested in talking to anyone who thinks we're the cause of the issue. Our support forums would be a great first step and if we need more information we'd have you email in: http://discussions.agilebits.com

Thanks!

Kyle,

It seriously rocks that you guys at AgileBits have your ear to the ground here on the Apple forums. Good on ya.

My observation is that the Yosemite Mail text entry delay occurs at a moment when Mail is doing something else. I see a *very* short beachball happen as the on-screen text entry stops. Sometimes it happens so fast the cursor just flashes - it changes so fast it never really has time to change all the pixels on the screen to change to the beachball. And man is it annoying. It's really a treat to type text here in a browser (Safari) without any text delay while I'm typing this!

But to be scientific, is there a way to temporarily disable 1Password completely? If I quit the 1Password app and the 1Password Mini menu bar item, does that make 1Password intert or are there other background processes I'd need to stop?

Thanks again,

Hi All!

Fisherking, that's good news for us then, but probably not good news for you.

Kirk, if you open the main 1Password application and click 1Password 5 in the menu bar, then hold Control you'll see "Quit 1Password and 1Password Mini." Clicking that will quit any part of 1Password running on the system. Note that clicking the browser extension icon will either fail or will start the mini again so be aware of that. The extension will not work without the Mini running.

While one user did report that it helped him, I am rather guessing that it's more of a red herring than anything else. I'm having a hard time trying to think of ways that we could be at fault here unless there was some common API or library in use that is causing it. We don't interface with Mail at all so that certainly isn't the cause.

One thing I would be curious about though is if anyone here is experiencing this issue, quits 1Password and sees it go away, let me know which version of 1Password they're using AND from where they downloaded it. If you goto the About screen it'll say "Agile Web Store" which is our store and "Mac App Store" if it came from there.

Thanks!

I don't believe that the lag is related to 1Password, but that is just speculation on my part. I am running 1Password version 5.0.2 from MAS. In my experience the lag is very intermittent. Sometimes I will go a day without the lag. Then it starts and lasts for a while. I have all my normal apps running ( I typically have a lot) and I write a lot of email. I think that if 1Password was involved then I would never have the wonderful lag-free periods.

I note that OS X 10.10.2 Beta 3 has been released to developers with fixes for Mail. We can only hope that banishing the lag is one of the fixes.

Hi Kirk,

Yea, good for us, not good for you 😟

If anyone here actually finds a real cause please let me know so I can help by filing a Radar on your behalf. I'll see if I can possibly punt it to someone who can take a look. No promises there but I'll do my best!

At minimum let me know the radar number if you file one and any other information and I'll file a duplicate which will hopefully help you all.

I was trying to watch Mail's Activity window, and ended up making a screen recording. I don't think I see an activity message when the typing stops, but maybe I need to record both the activity window and the composing window.

Another approach would be to record Console at the same time as typing. I have looked at Console after the fact and didn't see anything suspicious, but maybe I wouldn't notice.

Kyle and all

I filed a bug report at: https://bugreport.apple.com/

My report is #19223365

And Apple Feedback here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

I suggest everyone do the same.

In addition, I've tweeted to the major Mac press personalities (Chris Breen, Jason Snell, Serenity Caldwell (MacWorld), Topher Kessler (CNET), Dave Hamilton & John F. Braun (of Mac Geek Gab), etc., trying to get as much press coverage as possible. I also submitted this forum thread at MacNN. The bigger, more wide spread we can make this, the more likely it is to get fixed. If you know someone in the Mac press, be sure to let them know we're seeing an issue and as this thread grows and gets archived by Google and other search engines, we seem to be finding more and more people who are experiencing the Mail text delay in Yosemite.

Everyone: please remember - Apple doesn't read these forums so posting a "Me too" post here isn't the only thing you should do. Please use the links above to let Apple know about this.

Also, if your machine is covered under AppleCare (My Mid-2010 MacBook Pro isn't anymore), please call them (800) 275-2273) or visit the "Genius" Bar and let them see this in all of it's annoying glory.
