Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad). It is a sporadic issue. Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response. I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard. Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard. Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina. When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue? Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

MacNN News folks responded to my email with the following summary:

This can only help other users with the issue in Yosemite Mail find this thread and hopefully bring it to Apple's attention via the "Genius" Bar, AppleCare, feedback or bug reporting forms (links above).

my email is with hypermart. i DID have the problem with my (generally unused) icloud email.

the lag happens ONLY in apple mail (not when i tried Postbox).

it does NOT seem to happen in a test user account, so ONLY in my main account.

it started for me a week ago, out of nowhere; no updates installed; nothing changed in my setup (that i'm aware of).

does NOT happen for my GF (who's NOT on yosemite).

def mysterious...

Wow - I did not expect to generate all this discussion!

Update on my end - I have been traveling a bit, thus using my late 2013 MBP (w/ Retina display) just as a notebook. Over the past month, I continue to not exhibit the lagging issue when typing using the MBP built in keyboard. With that said, as soon as I plug it into my Drobo and display via firewire, keyboard and Logitech Mouseman (wireless) via a USB 3.0 hub, I have gotten the lag issue in mail.... Until I allowed the Safari update to process yesterday. Since then, the lag has becoming variable, as in, from not being noticeable to a few milliseconds to worse than before. I have sent some longer email replies where I have not noticed much of a lag (but still noticed), and I have sent some that were painful due to the longer lag. Hmmmm.

Two quick shout outs of thanks - Kirk, really appreciate you messing around with this and notifing MacNN. Kyle, thank you for chiming and caring! I have been a log time fan, user and recommender of 1Password, and yours and Agile's support has cemented that.

BTW: As soon as I can register as a Developer, I will file a bug report. Appears Apple's server attached to the Developer registration is down. :-(

I am not traveling this week, so I will try to do some debugging with hardware connections and software running to see if something is conflicting on my system......

@Alf & Kirk. Not true. If this is about Mail saving or spell checking or anything that requires some communication protocol with any server, not just Apple's, they "could" in theory have changed something in their network settings. It could be an IMAP protocol that happening with any and all mail accounts. Safari is almost always open on my laptop where I'm having the problem and it could even be some bug about how Mail talks to Safari.

Truth is that I don't know and none of us do at this juncture. I'd just like to know why all of a sudden I was able to type 800+ words today in an email without the delay with all things being the same. Maybe the bug takes Sunday's off?

I just read this whole thread. I have a three-year-old 11-inch MacBook Air and an early 2009 iMac, both running Yosemite 10.10.1, The lag in typing showed up in both machines shortly after the upgrade. I did switch to Helvetica Neue for Mail—Helvetica wouldn't validate, anyway. But the lag remained. I turned just about everything on and off in Mail prefs, but the lag remained.

Then I tried switching the check spelling setting from "as I type" to "when I click Send." BINGO. At least for now, for me. I switched it back and forth three times just now and tested: I had the lag in "as I type" mode but not in "when I click Send." And I just composed and sent an email without thinking about the lag, just like in the good old days, and everything was fine. For now.

Hi All,

After chatting with our developers here the best thing we can do to help here is to make sure we get a properly filed rdar.

Has anyone filed one yet? If so, what's he rdar # and if not, can someone quickly summarize the issue with everything that has been tested, os x versions, Mail.app version, any troubleshooting, any log files that are present and possibly relevant?

If we do that I'll file a rdar and post the rdar number here, along with an openradar (http://www.openradar.me/page/1). This would allow anyone to duplicate the report, more duplicates mean more eyes and more eyes mean a possible fix sooner. The key is to make sure we give them as much information as we can and that's what I'll be happy to work with you all on.

Kyle
