Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

Yes, there are users with iMacs (see page 10 in this thread):

"I have a 5K retina display iMac, and an Apple wireless keyboard."

and Mac Pros (page 4 in this thread) as well:

"To eliminate the idea that this is an older or slower machine issue, I am running a recently built $10K MacPro.  1 TB SSD.  64 GB Memory 1866 MHz DDR3.  2.7 GHz 12 Core."

    Yuck.

My mid 2011 11" MacBook Air and early 2009 24" iMac both have the lag. I've tried almost every attempted remedy in this thread to no avail.  Both machines are running OS X 10.10.1 (Yosemite) with everything up to date. There wasn't a problem with 10.10. It showed up after the update. The bug appears to affect both machines in exactly the same way, although the lag on the older machine is subjectively longer. I haven't tried to measure, that's just an impression. If true, the speed of the MacBook Air's SSD might explain it. Not the lag, though!

As per someone's suggestion here, I turned off check spelling as you type, and (for the most part) my lag seems gone.  I can't remember if it resurfaced on one occasion or two or not.  When the bug's not there, I forget about it.  My guess is the spell checking algorithm is wonky.

no difference here with spell check off. one interesting thing: always seems to start on the second line i type...usually part-way into that second line, i get the momentary beachball...then all **** breaks loose (so to speak).

sometimes, several lines in, the lag disappears. other times, i get a few more flashing beachballs.

Disabling hand off didn't help for me.  I just noticed that lag is present only in the RTF editor for the body.  The subject and TO/From are very fast.  Another thought, typing seems to slow down for me when Apple tried to suggest a mistyped word.  It seemed that when I typed perfectly it had less work to do, but when I typed "quicly" on purpose it popped the little blue suggestion which slowed things noticeably.  Or maybe it's all in my imagination?  It's emails in text-edit for me for now.  I really hope this gets picked up by Apple as an official bug.

I see the problem with both my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro. I've tried every trick mentioned in the long thread with no success. Sometimes I have a period with trouble-free typing, then the problem returns with no hint as to what changed. I've tried wireless USB keyboards, bluetooth keyboards, and wired keyboards and there is no difference.

The problem first surfaced with 10.10 and remains with 10.10.1

Is there anyone here who has this issue NOT using an iPhone? Has anyone tried disabling Handoff on the PHONE (in Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps)?

Yes. I have an iPhone 6, and did try disabling Handoff on the iPhone sometime back. This did not fix the Mail bug for me.

My MBP does not have Bluetooth 4 and is incompatible with Handoff. Mu iPhone is a 4s and does not have Handoff. I have an iPad Air as of today but I have had this problem for two months.

    Re the discussion topic:

I'm wondering how many who have posted to the discussion are NOT using an external keyboard and have nothing attached to our MacBooks other than a power cable as I do and still have the problem.

I suggest that all future posts here include whether you are using an external keyboard (and manufacturer) or using your MacBook's keyboard.

No beachball here when text-input in Mail freezes temporarily for me on 2011 MacBookPro keyboard. /e/

All my reports are from a retina iMac with a new Apple Bluetooth keyboard.

I occasionally see beachballs in Mail (an almost never in any other app), but the beachballs don't seem related to text delay. Even when text display is completely frozen, I see no beachball.

often, it's just me and my macbook pro; no external anything... and my mac doesn't support handoff, so not that. weird that it almost always starts on the second line of text...
