Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

I have a late 2012 iMac 21", 8Gb ran, 1 TB disk with USB keyboard, still running Mountain Lion - I have exactly the same problem, which might indicate that any of the last many OS upgrades haven't fixed it - or what?
It's quite annoying, but somehow I have learned to live with it (and use GMail instead).

I must admit I have a notion that the issue was not present when I got the iMac two years ago - but I cannot remember when I first noticed the lagging - sorry. I started with OS X 10.8.2, got updated to 10.8.3 March '13, 10.8.4 June '13, and 10.8.5 September '13. Then ML was obsoleted and I haven't bothered to make upgrades to the system since (it works fine). October '13 I have an supplement to 10.8.5, and I have several security updates since.
I really can kick my self for not noting when this occurred - but anyway I hope this information is useful.

I've had some success eliminating the keyboard lag by going to System Preferences > Universal Access > Keyboard and toggling the "Slow Keys" option on and off. I always have Slow Keys off, but toggling it seems to cause a reset of the setting.

Jan 21, 2015 12:15 PMby LarsDane,Agree, It seems that somewhere in the process of adding to much chrome to the exterior, Apple forgot to maintain the engine. One could argue that Apple most likely consider this a minor annoyance and thus will not spend the necessary time to fix it - even if it is across several iterations of their OS.
What is unnerving, is that how many other, and potential more serious issues are not tackled by Apple - but is hidden in the dungeons of support fora?
Apple - please mount the white stallion and enter the scene….

Jan 21, 2015 1:10 PMby AngryofMayfair,Well that is very interesting, I didnt realise the problem spanned across different os' s - going back to Mavericks has cured both the lag and the backspacing cursor for me 100%. Have been running on my Mavericks BU for more than 3 weeks now and there is absolutely no sign of problems.
I plugged in my Yosemite SSD and ran Mail on it yesterday (needed to make use of Mail Drop to email some large files - that was a total waste of time, would not work, ended up using Dropbox) and the typing lag and backspacing cursor were there, as I expected...
So for me the problems are fixed with going back to Mavericks....

Jan 21, 2015 1:15 PMby Klahane,I'm sure I never noticed any text-display lag in Mail until after the Yosemite public release. It was not present in the betas for me, and also not in previous OS versions.
(As to MailDrop, your issue may be that MailDrop calculates when to activate based on the sending ISP, not the receiving one. It would be great if Apple would allow the user to force MailDrop.)

Jan 21, 2015 1:30 PMby AngryofMayfair,I think 99% of us here only have had the problem since Yosemite (hence the thread title), it really surprised me to hear of the same problem with Mavericks, but that's very much a minority situation.
Mavericks works 100% for me, that's where I'm staying until the problem is recognized by Apple and a fix is issued. ..

Jan 21, 2015 1:31 PMby Klahane,I bet this is iCloud related. It feels to me like Mail is doing something in the background, and I often see incoming and outgoing activity when I see the delay.
In another thread, I just posted an experience that might be related. This has happened twice (that I remember), with both incidents identical:
First, my iPhone 6 went missing from iTunes. Plugging it in with a USB-Lightning cable worked fine, but it dropped off the list as soon as I unplugged it.
Second, my iPhone 6 wasn't updating Reminders. On checking, I found it would not accept my iCloud password. Powering the iPhone down and back up fixed the problem without any further action. In other words, I wasn't logged out of iCloud, the phone just couldn't contact it. Reminders immediately updated after the restart. In addition, as soon as I got home, my iPhone 6 appeared in iTunes.
In both cases, other functions, such as phones, all apps (that I used), LTE, etc. worked fine.

it seems impossible to come up with anything that's 100% involved with the problem other than Mail itself.
Maybe it is related to iCloud but for me that does not add up, I am not having any lag problems whatsoever now I have gone back to Mavericks.
Perhaps its a combination of iCloud and Yosemite Mail, there seems to be a number of changes and enhancements to mail in 10.10

Yes. That's exactly what I meant, iCloud + Yosemite (release version). With Handoff, you'd expect Mail to be uploading copies of e-mails in progress as you type, not waiting until after you send.

- I didn't notice this issue on any machines until Yosemite. No one in my office is having this issue but me and I'm the only one running Yosemite.
- Mail is usually updated as part of the OS updates is it not? So those experiencing the delay on the pre-Yosemite, what version of Mail is installed? Mine is 8.1 (1993) and I'm running 10.10.1. My instinct is that this is not an issue that predates Yosemite but I can't prove it.
- I'd caution those experiencing the delay in pre-Yosemite systems to consider the more traditional causes of pausing (disk usage pegging, CPU pegged, memory swapping). Mail in Yosemite is pausing with none of those symptoms for me. I'm about to install MenuMeters to confirm this. I'm getting beach balls during the pauses but the CPU and hard drive are yawning which tells me the Mail threads itself are choking.
