Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

I am working with Arial and have the same problem.  I think that if changing to some other font fixes the problem, it is not a permanent fix.

    Does anybody have Dockstar installed?

I tried removing the com.apple.mail folder as per adlerasc's suggestion and it seemed to work but Dockstar no longer appears to be working.

I'm replying to my own post as it seems no one has echoed in here to tell me if they've tried my solution.  For the record I have not had the lag for 3 days running.

changed nothing for me. did exactly what you suggested. first email i typed...lag. again, i am only seeing this on the space bar and the return key, not on actual text. but consistent with how it's been. restored my V2 folder, and am back to the 'slow keys' workaround for now...

I don't see the display lag restricted to any particular character. The delete key (backspace) and the space key are the worst because you can't tell where you are.

i can type a lot of letters (nothing anyone could read ), and see no lag. but when i type a bunch of spaces, or hit return several times...mail stalls, i see a momentary beach ball, then the cursor jumps ahead....

For me, at least, this attempt at a fix caused a worse problem than the text-display lag.

After removing com.apple.mail from user/Library/Containers, then restarting Mail, Mail would not retain the state of mailboxes and folders. Every time I closed its window and opened a new one, or quit and restarted Mail, all the Mailbox folders were closed.

So, sorry, I can't fairly test this idea.

that wasn't in the instructions. just the removal of the V2 folder (edenorchestra also archived his inbox; i simply moved all sent mail and inbox mail to other folders before trying this)... do you still have the Container file? you could try shutting down mail, and putting it back (replacing the current com.apple.mail file)...

I have a random theory and wonder if anyone has time/ability/willingness to test:

It seems the lag we’re seeing is related to individual words (thus people’s thought about the space bar making the lag start and the observation that streams of random characters without spaces doesn't induce the lag). I wonder if Yosemite is looking at individual words and/or groups of characters to see if there is a keyboard shortcut/text replacement (System Preferences > Keyboard > Text) that might need to be invoked.

These keyboard replacements sync across an iCloud account so this could explain why people with brand new machines are also seeing the lag.

Is anyone able to delete their collection of keyboard text entries and/or find the .plist that holds these and eliminate them?

    Kirk out

Sorry. I got my wires crossed. This was the fix I tried:

    1) Quitting mail

    2) Going the user library folder, the going to containers.

    3) I threw out com.apple.mail

For me, that caused Mail to always open a window with all mailbox folders closed.

And, yes, I did archive my folder and have put it back with no consequences.

Man is this ever annoying.  I'm starting to look at Outlook for the Mac...

outlook? shudder.... at least, check out other apps (like postbox). but for now, the 'slow keys' fix is not too complicated. i keep that window open (just hidden), until i need to switch 'slow keys' off. a decent workaround for now...
