Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Mail

Have you read through the threads at least a little?  I realize its long but . . .

There are tons of posts from people NOT using any plugins such as me.

So far removing corrupted fonts via Font Book has held for a week or so.

did that a month ago, and changed nothing here. so far, the one consistent fix (or workaround) is enabling 'slow keys' in Accessibility>Keyboard. a nuisance (no caps lock, hard to highlight text, etc), but at least Mail is usable.

I've been leaving it on all the time, and turning it off when needed (ie when i'm writing in another app).

    Font cache or corrupted Fonts?

    Been there, done that.

Don't mean to be snarky, it's a good suggestion, but it's been tried.

I'm convinced that this is an issue with the release version of Mail in Yosemite. Apple has to fix it. It's not our fault.

I'm the one who came up with the "enabling slow keys" work around and just wanted to chime in on the mail plug-ins and font corruption. I have no corrupted fonts nor have I ever used any mail plug-ins. This really seems to me from all the checking I have done that it's totally a Yosemite Mail problem. Very annoying bug! It's enough to make me try the new Outlook for Mac.

I'm sorry I didn't stumble across someone's earlier mention of plugins as a possible source of the issue. Yes, I did read a few pages, but at 36 pages and well over 500 posts, I would ask your forgiveness for not spending the time it would've taken to read them all.

It's apparent that there's likely a bug involved, and we all need to make sure we note the issue at http://apple.com/feedback/mail.html, since no one from Apple is reading all 36 pages of this thread either.

FIngers crossed for a fix in 10.10.3!

Theory of the day: what version of Java are folks running?  I just had to revert back to Apple's version of Java from Oracle's (in order to get some music software running again) and have been experiencing improved typing in Mail.  Early days yet -- it's only been about 24 hours, so this may be another false hope.  But I thought I'd throw it out there.  For people who feel adventuresome, here are a few links that I used:

Go here to test which version of Java is running on your Mac (if you are running a version from Apple, my theory is blown up since I'm guessing that ours is a problem with ORACLE Java) - Mine shows "Java Version 1.6.0_65 from Apple Inc." now that I've switched back:

    http://javatester.org/version.html

Go here to download the Apple Java that I'm using:

Java for OS X 2014-001 (the "download" button was only available in Safari for me)

Go here to switch over from ORACLE to Apple Java:

Java for OS X 2014-001: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web plug-in and Web Start features - Apple Support

NOTE: this is Java that Apple distributed a while back, with some security issues -- now days it's unsupported because ORACLE has patched the software and Version 8 is distributed with Yosemite.  But if this "fix" continues to work for a few days, I may have a clue that will be useful for Apple.  So again -- this is only for the adventurous among you.

    Small correction here:

No version of Java is distributed with Yosemite, in fact, when you install Yosemite it removes any version you may have had. Oracle (and Apple) recommend the use of Java SE 8 with Yosemite, but Java SE 6 will still work with it. Both are available and can even co-exist, depending on your needs.

No Java running in Safari here.

I've never switched from the version 6 Apple used to include, and have never added Java back after installing Yosemite.

Hope you're right about 10.10.3 -- I can confirm that fiddling with Java didn't work.

13 or so emails in, one reboot: no lag. am gonna call this a win... and won't be back to this thread, UNLESS the lag returns.

EDIT: i wanted to thank forum member R Meyer, who found the 'slow keys' fix, which made Mail usable until this fix. hopefully, 10.10.3 will be out of beta soon...

Jumping in the fray here ... 10.10.3 beta seems to have fixed typing lag in Mail. Have sent a few emails thus far, and typing seems to be normal.

The problem is solved with the 10.10.3 beta. No lag whatsoever. I've been using Mail version 8.2 (2087) that can with this Public Beta since last night and haven't had a single issue.
