Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with an external monitor after waking your computer from sleep. The following resource should help you troubleshoot this issue, specifically checking the connections and resetting the PRAM/SMC:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support

Thanks,

Nov 6, 2014 12:23 PM in response to Matt_M.by ak1956,Hi Matt
I tried reseting PRAM and SMC - no luck. Screen will not start after going to sleep. I have started restarting my MBP to bring the screen back on which is not a great solution when trying to pick up my work where I left off.
Any other suggestions?
Andrew

Nov 6, 2014 12:41 PM in response to ak1956by chrislaw07,I have the exact same problem. Everything worked perfectly until I upgrade to Yosemite. (Actually, the beta version of Yosemite worked as well. It was the final one that caused the problem.)
My example:
Macbook Pro Retina.
I plug in a Viewsonic external display via Thunderbolt.
It works until the completer sleeps. Then NOTHING will make the monitor come back on. Not even unplugging and plugging back in.
The only fix is to turn the computer off (with the monitor NOT plugged in), and then after a full reboot, plug the monitor back in.

Nov 7, 2014 7:44 AM in response to chrislaw07by ak1956,I think I may have a work around.
I have changed my monitor settings - I have disabled input auto-detect and set the input to DVI. So far the monitor seems to wake up from sleep OK. I will keep an eye on it for a few days and see if the issue reoccurs.

Nov 22, 2014 4:52 AM in response to ak1956by ak1956,Well that did not work. Unfortunately my screen will sometimes not wake after sleep.
I think this one may be a system issue and beyond us users ability to resolve......Lets hope Apple have recorded it and a fix comes sometime.

Nov 22, 2014 5:10 AM in response to ak1956by ak1956,Just found this on Dell Support. Does not help me much, but I post to help anyone else looking for a fix to this problem.
NB I am using the Dell monitor mentioned in this thread.

Jan 4, 2016 2:35 PM in response to ak1956by aquarilis,Hi,
I have the same problem appearing after upgrading to Yosemite running on a late 2013 MBP with an external monitor which won't turn on after waking from sleep.
The thing is that the MBP's screen would turn on correctly, but as it is set up as the extended secondary screen, I don't get to see the login/password screen which is supposed to appear on my external -primary- screen which doesn't seem to receive any signal (the status LED on external comes up when waking from sleep, but then the screen returns to sleep mode).
found a quick workaround though: close the MBP lid (the external screen would then turn on properly and act as the only screen), and then reopen the lid again to get back to the normal dual-screen configuration.
Maybe some hints for those who would know how to investigate this issue further? anybody out there?
