Q: The name of my startup disc has disappeared.

The name of my startup disc has disappeared on my desktop! The symbol is there and the name underneath now reads "=-09-8[=]". Is this something I should be concerned about?

Select the icon and press RETURN to activate the name field. Enter your desired name and press RETURN when finished.

Thank you. I could re-name it (what disc is used for the start-up? I don't recall) but I wondered what had caused the change in the first place. Is it a virus, perhaps, and will anything else change?  Is the machine so old now that things will start going wrong?

The change was probably due to you inadvertently putting the cursor in the name field such that you renamed it by pressing keys without knowing it. This is not a computer problem but a user problem.

Normally, the startup disk is named "Macintosh HD."

"Macintosh HD", that was it! Such a relief to know it was something I had done and not something going wrong - thank you very much for your help.
