macbook pro won't recognize ipad air to sync. says phone no longer connected??

When I plug my iPad Air into my Macbook Pro to sync the screen of my iPad blinks continuously and the mac puts up a message that says this phone is no longer connected. I have no idea what is going on. Have rebooted both. Even completely reset my iPad and it's still happening.
