Permanently display the sidebar on IMAC

how do I permanently display the sidebar. At the moment I have to hover over the location for it to be displayed.
Do you actually mean the Dock rather than the Sidebar?
The Dock is located at the bottom or either side of the screen; the Sidebar is located at the left side of a folder window.
To keep the Dock always visible, go to System Preferences > Dock, and uncheck the item "Automatically hide and show the Dock". Note - that is the location of that setting in Yosemite (OS X 10.10); in other OS X versions that setting's location might be slightly different.
