Why is iOS 8 destroying my iPad 2?

My ipad 2 worked fine with iOS 7. The upgrade to ios 8 has been a disaster. The ipad 2 freezes up frequently, apps run much slower and often crash. Apple should have advused against the upgrade to iOS 8 for iPad 2. iOS 8 has effectively destroyed my iPad 2. Apple should allow ipad 2 users to revert back to iOS 7 rather than let us suffer with iOS 8.

There are a lot of iPad 2 owners who have had no problems with it, and then there are others who had initial problems, and took care of them by with solutions here. Here's one such solution that has worked well for a lot of people. Be sure to do your backups and turn off your anti-virus software on your computer when using iTunes for the factory default reset.

There are a few people who having problems here, but you also have to realize that to say that the vast majority of users of iPad 2 are having problems like this ... is simply absolutely false. I know that, because of the many who have said that they don't have problems (here on this forum), plus others who have said directly to me on these threads that they've done that one particular solution that I've provided and have had good results.

The most you can say that that "some users" are having problems ... but definitely not the overwhelming and vast majority of the users.

AND ... Apple is STILL SELLING TODAY the model iPad 2 on their online web store. Someone can buy that today and get an extended AppleCare contract for a full two years of warranty and support. That's TODAY ... so it's very obviousl that Apple intends to FULLY SUPPORT the iPad 2 models for at least another two years, simply from the fact that they are offering a full two years on the warranty -- plus the fact that they say that these iPad 2 models that they sell TODAY will run iOS 8.1 ... :-) ...

I Just mentioned the drop in performance between IOS 7 and IOS 8 which is very noticeable on an iPad 2. There are a lot of forums and websites suggesting ipad 2 owners stay on IOS 7 until at least IOS 8.1. IOS 8.1 while much better than IOS 8.0 is still much slower than IOS 7. There are not a lot of people anywhere with ipad 2's that think IOS 8.0 out performs IOS 7.

Who said it outperforms iOS 7? You saying that ... sounds more like you "moving the goalposts" in your argument ... LOL ...

What has been said though, by a number of users, is that once they went through these procedures, that iOS 8 has performed as well as iOS 7. Then others have said they noticed a very slight slowdown in iOS 8, and a very slight slowdown is what I would expect, although as I pointed out, users have said it's the same.

The same problems here. I cannot believe what Apple has done to my ipad2

Since you haven't said what it is that Apple has done, I'll give you a troubleshooting methodology and solution that many other users here have done themselves and have fixed their problems, without Apple needing to do anything for them ...

Follow this procedure for a Troubleshooting Methodology ... basically reset to factory default condition -BUT- be sure to do the following methodically and also to follow the part with Apple Support!

First you want to make sure you have several backups of your data and done with a couple of "different" sources. Be sure to understand what data is backed up and what is NOT on iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup. Use a variety of methods for backup ... you might check into Dropbox, in addition to your Apple options.

Then turn off your desktop anti-virus software when using iTunes for this reset to factory default. After you do that reset, then leave your iPad in its factory default state and see how it operates then. If you encounter any problems in that factory default state, then take it to Apple Support, and let them know that you have just reset it to that state with iTunes and have not put any of your data back on and it is operating in this fashion (whatever the problem is) in that pristine state. Make sure you keep that trouble ticket number, because if it has to be escalated through Apple Support, you're going to find all communications tied in with that number. If the lower level help isn't able to help you, then escalate it to a higher level to examine the problem. Keep at it with that trouble ticket number until Apple Support arrives at a solution to that problem. Be methodical and keep at it.

On the other hand, if everything is okay with the factory default condition, then restore your backup. Some people have discovered that the problem resides in the apps or something in the restored backup. If that's the case, then it's going to be trying and difficult to find out which developer's app is causing you the problem. And ... it's true ... that a developer not following Apple's instructions and guidelines for his app can CAUSE YOU TROUBLE. This kind of thing does happen from developers, especially when a new system upgrade comes out, because some developers ignore what Apple tells them about changes coming, and what they do BREAKS SOMETHING.

This is a troubleshooting methodology that you are going through. See it through to the end.

Although the tech is outdated and old it does not make the consumer responsible for poor software design. Maybe it's true that some still using the iPad 2 have had little to no difficulties while others including myself have non stop disasters again and again since installing iOS 8.

For myself at least and I'm sure there are others out there still using the iPad 2 we have followed all the numerous step by step guidelines provided by apple yet the problem consistently comes back and regardless of how many times we go through these same steps it's a problem not caused by Us the consumer but by those who released the software namely Apple. Regardless of the age of the device I'm sure many of us prior to the issues we face with iOS 8 found maybe some bumps in the road on iOS 7 versions but nothing in comparison to iOS 8.

You stated above that:

how can we know this is a true statement? Do you have a list of all current users still using the iPad 2 with issues and those as you say "those that don't have problems", because if we really ran the numbers and tracked each iPad 2 purchaser down your "I know" answer may just change. For example, how many of those iPad 2 users instead of consistently dealing with this iOS disaster decided to upgrade and waste more money since they probably had the funds to? While I'm sure those that still use their iPad 2 should be compensated for the flawed software release sent to US and have still been left in technological **** even after following all your step by step guides.

Have you tried installing the last two iOS updates?

iOS 8.1.1 was supposed to address many iPad 2 users' issues.

Also, the newest update is iOS 8.1.2.

I have an IPad 3 and I upgraded to iOS 8.1.1 after some time went by and my iPad 3 is running all right.

I feel it is running about the same or perhaps a little slower on iOS 8.1.1 ( now 8.1.2), but is still very usable and functional.

If you have a computer with iTunes installed, I would try the updates through connecting your iPad to your computer and do the update that way instead of over the air using WiFi or cellular wireless signals.

Backup your iPad over ITunes, first.

Star Traveler has been pretty quiet since Apple released iOS 8.1.1 which was specifically released to address a myriad of issues that iPad 2 users were having.

Star Traveler made assumptions that the issues iPad 2 users were having were all those users' fault and not the fault of iOS. and the iPad 2, itself.

Obviously, Apple was quite aware of the issues iPad 2 users were having.

I have installed the latest update and followed the method Apple provided by running the update via iTunes through my computer rather than WiFi to avoid any data loss. However I'm still faced with a constant issue where when I run an app and it's different when it happens or which it happens with, where my iPad suddenly blacks out and the reboot occurs and I have to re-run the process Star provided. It's even become more frequent with the newest updates leading me to feel like I'm being forced to either purchase a new iPad or switch entirely to a new tablet where I can hopefully avoid this consistent issue that has arisen since iOS 8.

I did a factory reset of my Ipad2 and deleted all of my data running the latest version of IOS 8.1.2. When the IPAD finished, it is still slow. I decided not to restore my data. I have stopped using Safari, and started using chrome, but it is still slow on the web. I can type a word in and I get to wait 5 -10 seconds for the letter to show on the screen. IOS8 was a significant performance downgrade on my Ipad2. I don't mind my Ipad getting old, but i do mind having Apple slow it down with OS upgrades to the point where I need to buy a new tablet.

Apple destroyed my Ipad and Iphone 4S as well with IOS 8. My wife and I bought iphone 4S's near the same time and she is still running very old software. Her phone runs amazing and mine is at snail speeds as is the Ipad. I deleted both as new and nothing helps. I looked for a fix but its obvious apple is forcing us to spend money on new hardware. I will never by another Apple product again.

Feb 21, 2015 6:30 AM in response to Star Traveler

The problem with the so called restore methods is all of one's optional applications will go away and have to be reloaded. That is not a restore. That is being employed by Apple for no pay. Apple has created a tremendous amount of work and expense. They knew full well that this would make it necessary for people to buy new hardware. I also am having problems with my Brother printer communicating with my Macbook Air 2013 after its upgrade. I am no longer playing Apple's game. Next purchase will be a MS Surface Pro 3. Apple has nothing that compares with it. So Apple you are successful with your intentions. I will buy new hardware. NONE of it will be APPLE hardware. You guys blew it.
