what does 720p and 1080p mean as it relates to you tube videos and how can you tell what you can view on a iPad?

How can you tell if a video is a 1080p or 720p video on YouTube? Then how can you tell what an iPad can view - 720p or 1080p? can an iPad set at 720p view a 1080p video and vice versa?

720 and 1080 refer to the number of horizontal lines that the screen is able to display vertically. Your iPad's specs will tell you the answer to your question. They are measures of resolution. The larger the number the higher the resolution.
