This is what I *thought* you could do (and what the mac guy at the shop said I would be able to do).
Mac Air 2011 connecting to IPS LCD.

BUT the USB device on the Dual Link adaptor does not show up even on System Profiler, and any device connected to it is not recognised (e.g. keyboard, mouse, external hard disk, printer, etc).
I know the USB at the mac end is required because if it's not connected, the display does not work. So it is being used for power only - If I connect the USB to an apple power supply instead, it powers the link.
I have not been able to find a specific message on the apple web site that mentions that the USB socket is only to be used for a single specific monitor connection. The use of ambiguous phrases, for example "such as" in the FAQ item "14. Which monitors work with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter?" does not clearly state if the product is intended for use with ONLY the Apple Cinema display: your wording "in particular" and apple's wording "such as" are at non synonymous. Also this question is worded as if in relation to the DVI-D socket, not the USB socket.
I am simply looking for Apple's specific intention for including the USB socket on the large end, such as if it is compatible with the USB specification (as would be implied by its use of the USB logo next to the socket) or simply used for power only. This has not been addressed in the device documentation, nor on the product specification page.
