Q: extremely slow mac all of a sudden, Frequent SPOD

Today I started getting some pretty severe slowdown/performance problems with the Macbook Pro that I've been using.   My EtreCheck log sheet is attached at the end of this message.

What I was doing before -The last time I remember was that I was having issues with Firefox and did some "Force Quit" commands and then tried to re-install a fresh copy.  I did not install MacKeeper or anything like that.

System-

2.5 GHz, Macbook Pro (13 inch display)

4 GB

Problems -
The problems started rather suddenly this morning.    Since then, the computer basically runs extremely slowly and crashes often.  This includes frequent "spinning wheels of death" for programs/commands executed by mouse clicking.  For programs that are not run by this the commands generally just 'hang' for various stretches of time.

Things I've done/checked -
So far, I've done several things to either fix the problem or diagnose it.  No effects as far as  I can see:

- used Activity Monitor to verify that the system is not paging the hard drive (i.e. that I'm out of RAM) and that there are no programs chewing up a large amount of CPU.  .   System is not paging the hard drive no problems using a ton of CPU.

- cleared the Dynamic Link Editor Cache from here:

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

- Used EtreCheck (output attached below).

Things I've noticed

- GUI-executed programs get the spinning wheel of death; those executed from command line hang.

- During a 'hang', different tabs of a web browser become invisible.

- If I execute IDL (a programming/image display language) from Terminal in a new directory, it hangs the first time or will hang periodically.  If I exit and then execute again it loads progressively faster.  Same thing happens with simple unix commands like "ls" or "pwd"

Things I've yet to do

- I haven't run Disk Utility yet.   The initial time estimate for running it was very long, so I thought I would try to solve the problem in other ways first.

- I have not tried to wipe the hard drive.

Problem description:

I have frequent “Spinning Wheel of Death” freezes for commands I execute with a GUI/mouse clicking, hanging with command line executables (e.g. in Terminal) and overall slowness.

    *PLEASE HELP!*

    Some updates ...

    - I've rebooted in Safe Mode and run Disk Utility most of the way through before it started to hang and I had to kill the process.

    - I've run the Hardware check in both basic and extensive settings.  No hardware problems detected.

    - Restarted from there.  Looked at Console and was seeing some odd messages.  Spinning Wheel of Death freeze.

    - Tried restarting in Safe Mode, I've gotten to my login point and am getting Spinning Wheel of Death again!

It's probably an issue with the hard disk. I hope you have a recent backup, because it might be time for Recovery Mode.

    Hi:

Thank you so much for responding!!!! ...

Yes, I'm aware of Recovery Mode.  I've been trying to avoid it if possible. Looks like I might not be able to.  I guess I don't understand if my Hardware check says there's nothing wrong with the Hard Disk.

    Anyway ...

If I want to do Recovery Mode from Mountain Lion, it *is* correct to say that I just need an internet connection and a Time Machine backup, right?  I do not need a boot-able disk?

You don't need a bootable disk. But there's a slight chance the recovery installation fails because of an issue with the hard disk that cannot be solved by wiping the disk completely (reformatting). Also read the Additional Information at the end of the page I referred to.

Okay, a tech person is saying I should reboot in Recovery Mode and try to "repair the disk" first in Disk Utility.  This may fix the problem.  Before, I was running Disk Utility from within the OS, so I couldn't apparently "repair the disk", only repair the permissions.

    More help needed ***Update***

I've now twice done a reinstall of the OS.  The first time, the operation seemed to be great then I ran "repair disk permissions" which identified flaws in the JavaInstall and several CoreGraphics extensions.  I 'repaired' those permissions, which made the system run slow again, with frequent SWODs.  Generally speaking, these happen when I try to click on something or am using a web browser (happens with both Firefox and Chrome).   I also get it frequently with Finder and have gotten repeated hangs when scrolling through a Powerpoint presentation (~15 MB in size).  The second reinstall seems to also get hangs at the same moments.

I've attached the new EtreCheck log:

My planned next step is that if this doesn't improve then I will nuke the hard drive entirely, reinstall the OS, and reinstall from a TimeMachine backup.

I followed what Linc recommended on another forum here, running the bash script he produced:

MacbookPro started running really slow. Please help...

The good news is that it doesn't look like I'm getting I/O errors.  I am getting a lot of other things that are confusing to me.
