device and operating system that runs within it, for us to help.
If you have an iDevice running an iOS8, etc, the product is
not a computer and would not be addressed in this PPC
(powerPC processor architecture build era, pre-2006) ASC.
If you have an iMac and it is running OS X 10.5.8 or Before,
and does NOT have an Intel core or core2duo, etc CPU,
then we may be able to supply an answer based on that info.
The system, device, and era of the hardware do help to arrive
at a better match between your limited inquiry & proper answer.
There is no way we could know what the hardware or software
is, or the situation, when you say so little and/or may have
mis-placed your topic in an incorrect ASC discussion area.
In any event...

Half a year ago.
Does the situation still persist? Did you attempt to restart in SafeBoot with the shift key
held down, to see if the issue you noticed in regular boot attempt, did not occur then?
Some users with a complete backup plus Time Machine backups, would consider a
totally new reinstall and update of the OS X. Be sure you have anything worth keeping
saved on an external archive such as a storage hard disk drive.
Did you try to start in a second user account, such as another standard or admin?
There may or may not be a hardware issue behind the symptoms you cited back in Nov '14.
You may be able to start in Recovery mode and see if a repair of the hard drive by use of
OS X Utilities/Disk Utility could help. The first aid repair, and also repair permissions. And
then select the startup volume (macintosh HD) and boot the computer from it, to test.
How old is the iMac model, and what size is the display? How full is the hard drive capacity
of your accumulated content, verses the stated capacity in total of the unit?
Anyway, it's been some time since your initial post, & then it was in a vintage/obsolete early
iMac Power PC support discussions area from pre-2006 Mac hardware (with software limit.)
If you still have issues, please elaborate...

May 24, 2015 9:14 PM in response to Eric Rootby wbentleytx,I found my answer. It had to do with Family Sharing. When I purchased certain Apps I had family sharing turned on. Subsequently I turned it off. It appears my wife's ID in the App update authorization window was telling me her partition wasn't updated with "my shared apps." When I turned Family Sharing back on, the Apps updated to her partition. This is why her user name and password was needed since my shared app was being used by a family member.
The system was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.
