Nov 3, 2014 7:02 PM in response to Lysatrataby Kenichi Watanabe,Unfortunately, if the "grinding noise" is coming from the iPod itself (not over the headphones), the iPod's hard drive has probably become faulty. You can try doing a Restore using iTunes
Restoring iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
but if it does not get passed that "red warning circle," the iPod will not appear in iTunes. You can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
If it goes into Disk Mode, try connecting it to the computer and running iTunes.

Nov 12, 2014 7:25 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby Lysatrata,This will sound super barbaric but I was unable to put my ipod into disk mode. I scoured the internet for any information that I could find and I ran into this advice: Bang it because something inside is most likely stuck and banging will loosen what every has become stuck. I bang my ipod a couple of times on my desk and I was really desperate so that I dropped it on the carpeted floor and guest what, my ipod classic that was not recognized by my computer, itunes or my car is working like brand new. Something was freed up when I dropped it on the floor, banging had little effect so I got brave as I was pretty desperate, I dropped it a couple of times. It came back to life and I am a happy camper. Kenichi Watanabe, thanks for your help. L
