back up my pictures(about 8000) on a external HD

how can i back up my pictures(about 8000) on a external HD without using time machine .alsoa i would like to have them in events or folders so i can find the ones im looking for.THanks

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Moving iPhoto Library to an external location:

Before doing so, make sure that the external drive is formatted as HFS Extended (Journaled).
