Premade Loops in Garageband

General question for the group:

In the old Garageband, Apple had some made "songs" that were something like short, medium and long - these were ones you could just drop and play; you didn't have to create the song from scratch. In the new Garageband, I don't see these "songs" any longer - does anyone know what happened to them? Am I looking in the wrong place? Did Apple ditch them?

Thanks in advance.

Are you asking about "Magic GarageBand" or some of the loops? For example the "Cinematic" loops in the iLife Sound Effects collection?

Which version of GarageBand are you using now? Your profile signature "Mac OS X (10.4.2)" suggest a very early Garageband version.

The newest GarageBand, version 10, has no longer the iLife Sound Effects or Magic GarageBand, unless you let GarageBand 6.0.5 installed.

Then GB 10 can use the older loop library as well.

do I have to install the older version of Garageband along with the newer?

The previous version, GarageBand 6.0.5 ids working well with MacOS X 10.9.4, and you can have both versions installed in parallel. Do you still have the installer? You cannot download a full installer anywhere, you would need to buy a boxed iLIfe '11 installer DVD, if you did not keep the installer or can restore from a backup, that still has GarageBand '11. Did you uninstall the previous version, when you upgraded to GarageBand 10? The installer does not remove the older version, it will just move it to a subfolder of applications.

So the short answer is yes, Garage Band trashed those loops that were remade songs?

As long as you install on top of the previous version, the older loops will stay. But if you uninstalled previous versions to make a clean install and erased the loop library and instrument library the iLife Loops will be gone. If you did not uninstall anything, all loops from previous versions should be in the folder

/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/

- the version of Garageband I have is the newest...not sure how I can get the older version to install at this point.

if you don't have backups from an older Mac or owned a Garageband '11 version that came preinstalled with Lion or later, and is associated with your AppleID at the AppStore, you can try to buy an iLife '11 installer from Amazon and install from the DVD. Does your brand-new iMac have an optical drive, so you can read a DVD?
