Q: Is iDVD compatibility with Yosemite?

Hi, everybody!

When I installed Yosemite in my iMac, I chose to perform a clean installation, so I lost all of my applications. So, I tried to reinstall iDVD but I could't find it in AppStore. As I've read, iDVD really doesn't appears for direct installation, so, I installed it from my iLife CD and updated it to version 7.1.2. But, when I try to run it, the app freezes and I'm obligated to quit it (most of time, force quit) and relaunch it. But, in a few seconds (or minutes), the app starts freezing again and this makes impossible for me to use it.

I thinks it's not a problem caused by lack of memory, since I have 16 GB installed here...

Is the app compatible with Yosemite? If it is, what do you suggest for me to solve this issue? If it's not, could you suggest another good DVD creator?

Thank you!

As a test try using the 480p size movie in a new project and save it as a disk image.  Play the disk image with DVD Player.

On my version of imovie (8.0.6) to export I click Share; the drop-down menu consists of:

    • itunes
    • idvd
    • media Browser (this is what I used in the past)
    • You tube
    • Mobileme
    • Export Movie (this is what I used recently)
    • Export using Quick Time
    • Export using Final Cut

Export Movie has the following sizes to choose from: 178x144, 480x272, 640x360, 960x540 (what I have been using), and 1280x720.

Am I on the right path, or did I take a wrong detour?

You're on the right path with Media Browser. However, since iDVD resizes all media down to 640 x 480  I'd pick the size that's equal to that or the next size bigger (960x540 in your list of available sizes).  If iDVD has to downsize a lot it will result in lower image quality in the final product.

Did you have a disk in the optical drive or a disk image mounted on the desktop?  DVD Player requires a video DVD disk to be in the optical drive or the disk image of a video DVD to be mounted on the Desktop.  Which do you have and is it a video DVD?

I have an optical drive.  I was unaware that there is a distinction "video DVD".  I will have to obtain the specified quality DVD or seek another solution.  I am finding Apple's Yosemite experiment to be very inconveniencing.

There is no video DVD disk and non video DVD disk.  The difference is in the application that is used to create the disk.  This has nothing to do with Yosemite either.

You should start your own topic because you have a different problem than the OP. In the new topic state what you're trying to create, what system you're running, what video DVD authoring application you have and what you've tried so far.

    Thank you, Old Toad,

I take your point and will start another topic.  However, I had run iDVD with Maverick and crated both movies and slide shows.  In this instance after upgrading (or degrading) to Yosemite.  I created a slide show in iDVD.  In preview mode the pictures would not render in quality color.  Also after I burned to DVD the out put was a DVD in which the color flickered in and out to black and white and was of poor quality.

It was then that I happened onto this topic and tried to use your process of saving it as an image file.

Some users were getting purple tinted slides and got around it by converting the image files to .png.  Might try it with a couple to see if it works.

Thank you again.  I did convert a dozen to .png.  The first one rendered beautifully all others were black and white with a purplish tint.  I will try anything.  unfortunately this was not a solution.

Did the B/W png files have a purple tint before adding to iDVD?  If so run them thru an image editor or Photos to convert again to B/W in order to remove the tint.

Sorry I keep giving in adequate descriptions.  Originally all pictures are in color.  They appear in color when dropped into where slides go to be arranged in media.  When running the preview function the first slide appears normal in color every subsequent picture appears in black and white.  Those black and white do have a tint. This was the case with .jpg files as well as .png files.

The pictures in themes of the menu are all normal in excellent color.

When I burned the first DVD (using .jpg files) the menu was clear and functioned normally.  When the DVD was played all slide were of poor quality flashing in and out color to black and white.

I did not burn the test .png (because the preview seemed to indicate no change or improvement)

    OT,

Thank you for your patience and many suggestions.

I created a slide show in PHOTOS.  Exported it as a .m4v file.  Then imported it to iDVD.  The pictures may not be quite as sharp as slide show, but it worked well enough for me.

I consider my issue resolved and am appreciative of your assistance without which I might surely have given up and gone to other software.
