Safari will not open link from email

When trying to open a link from an email in Postbox (3.0.11) Safari 8 (OS X 10.10) will open a new tab, but nothing else happens. The new tab remains blank and the address bar is blank. This occurs when Safari is set as the default browser.

When I set Chrome as my default browser, Chrome will open the same link without any issues.

Any ideas or is this an undocumented feature for the new Safari.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Dominic23,

Thanx for the words. I tried that and turned off all my extensions (only had 2 (Ad Block Plus and Evernote). Was able to open this link from email. However, when I tried to go back in and re-add the extensions, I no longer had extensions as an option - not even the ON - OFF toggle. Also, when I am in Safari preferences I have to double click on every option (Gen, tab, etc...) to get the box to populate. Tried with a full shutdown and cold restart (after going to get coffee) and I still can't turn my extensions on in Safari. Like I said, Chrome works fine.

Empty Caches.

1. Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

"Develop" menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

2. Quit Safari if open.

Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" and then "Caches".

Look for the folder 'com.apple.Safari"

Right click "com.apple.Safari" and select "Move to Trash"

Relaunch Safari.

Uninstall SIMBL as follows. Back up all data before making any changes.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

/Library

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return. A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

Application Support/SIMBL

InputManagers/SIMBL

LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist

LaunchAgents/net.infinite-labs.SIMBLEnablerForSandboxedApps.plist

ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax

Log out and log back in.

Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

Linc,

Ran through your steps and did not have instances of SIMBL in the locations you listed. also a search using Spotlight doesn't show any instances of it.

I am at the point, I am going to just go back to using Chrome as my default browser as I have been having issues with several websites that recommend NOT using Safari.

Thanx for the help.
