I made sure I had a iCloud backup and for me it was gold. During the update I got the dreaded connect to iTunes symbol. I don't have a computer so I went over to the Apple Store where they restored my iPad from my iCloud backup. I not only got all my info back I regained 6 GB of much needed memory.
I had the same thing happen to two iPads I recently updated to iOS 8.1. Both were iPad mini 2's and both had completely different configurations. I thought it was odd that it happened to both devices. This update was the first I've ever seen that behavior and I've updated many devices throughout the years. Yes, I made iTunes backups of both of them immediately before the update so I was safe. I also gained some lost storage space back as well with both units. I have another iPad 3 and an iPad 4 to update but not just yet. The iPad 3 just may stay on iOS 6.1.3 since the wife loves that version.
Aloha, buddy!

Nov 4, 2014 5:45 PM in response to SergZakby bobseufert,Aloha SergZak .Good to hear you you got your iPads up and running again. The OTA update is a remarkable process until something goes wrong. Then you've never felt so helpless looking at the iTunes logo. I don't know how many resets I did to make it magically go away. Fortunately I learnt the value of updates over this past year. Stay well. Bob.

Nov 4, 2014 6:18 PM in response to paulfromsaltburnby petebook,Paul is totally correct.
I have iOS 8 on my iPhone and iPad.
- I just spent a half hour composing text in a web form. I hit the delete key once on the on-screen keyboard, the delete key remained highlighted. Safari just froze. My message was lost. It took forever for the iPad to figure out that it had frozen.
- I asked Siri the other day to read my latest text messages. It said "You have no messages." I looked at the lock screen and there were 3 text message notifications.
- I seem to randomly loose text messages. My friends have asked me "Didn't you get my reply?" so many times since I upgraded. It can't be a coincidence.
- The camera App reported to me that it could not take any pictures because there was no room on the device. I deleted 10 previous photos from my photo album (not iCloud) and then got the same message. The General control panel said I had 12gb used, and 0 bytes available.
- I always had great luck with the USB sync feature of my car being able to control my iPhone. I used it on a recent trip to AZ. On the trip, I wanted to listen to a great playlist. Randomly songs would just not play. I went through 30-40 minute stretches of silence, and then suddenly the music would return. Pressing "play" on the screen had no effect. Pandora worked fine however.
- I received a call last night and missed it. It was not a Facetime call. It rang on my iPad. It did not show up on my iPhone.
- Upon upgrading to iOS 8 on my iPhone, I have lost all my playlists and ringtones on my phone. They did not come back after any updates. I seem to also have music that I have never purchased before. I don't mean U2. I contacted support about this and they responded with a form letter. I have never purchased some of these horrible pop songs that are now showing up as available from iCloud. I don't like Taylor Swift!
I am not upgrading to Yosemite on my Mac until Mavericks gets updated and fixed. Mavericks has a new feature where it seems to automatically restart and loose all my work randomly. It doesn't even come up with a "Report Problem to Apple" message after it restarts.

Nov 5, 2014 1:26 AM in response to petebookby paulfromsaltburn,
I have, eventually, got my iPad back to where it was before it crashed. Unfortunately, it is exactly where it was. The reason I tried to reboot it in the first place was because with IOS 8.1 I have issues with conencting with the cellular data: issues that weren't there before. Those issues are still there. Is it possible to revert to IOS7? I didn't find any of the new features very relevant to me, but the bugs are. -

Apple does not have the infrastructure in place for rolling back apps either, some of which would quit working if the iOS was rolled back. Such a procedure has never been supported by Apple and they have never had the infrastructure to back up it up and to prevent the inevitable problems that would come about because of doing that.
BUT there have been hackers who have attempted to do that ... some successful and some not and thusly, completely destroying the iOS device ... but no one here would advise you to follow any "hacker route" and possibly destroy your iOS device.

Nov 5, 2014 6:50 AM in response to nicetomyby Star Traveler,The iCloud Backup is different than the iTunes Backup and there are things missing from the iCloud Backup. Unless you're fully aware of the differences and what is included in each backup, you do stand the chance of LOSING YOUR DATA. So, do be warned of that possibility. Nov 5, 2014 7:40 AM in response to Star Travelerby Briansyddall,Hi Just found out new update on way in a week or so ios 8.1.1 with a fix for older iPhones & ipads Cheers Brian

Nov 5, 2014 8:17 AM in response to Briansyddallby Star Traveler,I haven't had any major problems on my iPad 4, when going through all the updates for iOS 8 (except 8.0.1, which I didn't do). I've had a few minor glitches, but iOS 8.1 seems to have dealt with some of them for me (in the area of Safari). I'll look forward to doing this upcoming one and maybe a couple of other minor glitches will be helped.

Nov 6, 2014 10:06 AM in response to Star Travelerby nicetomy,Thanks Star Traveler! The links provided were very helpful. I don't have data synced from another computer so for me it will be just fine an iCloud backup.
Regardind the iOS versions, I wanted to know if 8.1 still has bugs because I read lots of complaints about 8.0.1. I didn't upgrade to any of these yet, just wanted to have some opinions before going for 8.1. Cheers!

Nov 11, 2014 6:43 PM in response to nicetomyby Cheryl3635,I am having multiple issues. Many of my apps including Facebook, scrabble game, Kindle, and weather channel all will shut down in the middle of me being in them forcing me to of course reenter the app. This problem occurs on a daily basis despite the iPad being powered off on a daily basis because of this problem. I have three email accounts on my iPad, the email app will freeze it will not allow me to go back to the list of three email accounts, the only way to resolve this problem is I have to power off the iPad and bring it back up. This problem occurs on a daily basis. I would not recommend upgrading to a point one until all the bugs are fixed. I hate to be so harsh but I hate iOS 8 and any version of it I wish I could go back to version 7. Myself and the millions of other dedicated Apple customers should not have to use a workaround such as powering off their iPad to resolve the problem. The best gift Apple can give to all of its customers is an update that fixes all these problems.
