How can I send messages to people without iMessage through my mac?

Hi,

The iPhone and Mac have to have been set up for iMessages to sync.

The iPhone must be joining the LAN where the Mac is using it's WiFi connection (the Mac can be Ethernet).

Then the Text Forwarding needs to be enabled on the iPhone in Settings > Messages > Text Forwarding.

It is best to do this when the Mac version is open as a Code is generated in a Pop up.

The Code number needs to be entered back on the Phone.

IF this is done already then the Text Forwarding section should list the devices it sis set up for and whether they are still active.

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question, and/or your current configuration. Are you currently using an iPhone with your Mac via Continuity? Continuity should allow you to send SMS messages from your Mac, via your iPhone, to any other phone, as outlined below:

You can also start an SMS or iMessage conversation on your Mac by clicking a phone number in Safari, Contacts, Calendar, or Spotlight.

I have a iphone 4s but my phone # is on vacation. I was able to send texts to other iPhones but now that stopped working. Email, and everything else is current on my phone. But I thought i could send texts to other peoples phones, iPhones or not, through my laptop.

You MUST have an iPhone with iOS 8 on it in order to use the feature to text people that don't have iPhones from your mac.
