Q: text message forwarding not working for iPhone 5

I have an iPhone 5 (with latest IOS8 installed) and Yosemite running on late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina. The two devices can communicate (address list, calendar, etc) and even hand-off for an email from the phone to the mac worked. I could also set the personal hotspot from the mac. However... trying to set text message forwarding does not. When I try to set it up on the iPhone, I expect (per the description) the messages app to start up on the mac, giving a code to be used to pair the devices, but that does not happen.

Is it possible this feature does not work on iPhone 5 only on later models?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Thanks for your answer but... unfortunately, it did not work, though I checked all the settings in that mail.

What I realized is that two of the menu items you refer to does not appear on my iPhone and Mac.

    • on the iPhone:  "Go to Settings > Phone. If you see Wi-Fi Calling, turn it off.", although you do have an "if", i.e., that may be normal.
    • on the Mac: "Open the FaceTime app, go to FaceTime > Preferences and turn on “iPhone Cellular Calls.”". That preferences in FaceTime is not visible.

Some other services do work, i.e., I can get the personal hotspot start-up from the Mac.

I actually realize that other handoff features do not work as advertised either. My understanding is that if I have a web site open on my iPhone's safari, then I should get a handoff icon on my mac near the dock; well, it does not appear. This is a missing feature not only with my iPhone; I also have a first generation iPad Mini, updated to the latest IOS, too, and that feature does not work either. Ie, it may be a Yosemite problem and not an iPhone/iPad problem...

B.t.w., just to make the situation clear, I did not do a clean install of Yosemite (nor do I want to, actually, it is just too much hassle), but I did an installation "on top" of Mavericks (that was always duly up-to-date).

    Sincerely

    Ivan Herman
