NNTP Newsreader

Can anyone recommend an NNTP newsreader that will allow sorting on multiple columns, has filtering, doesn't involve multiple windows (slider trays, or whatever you call them, acceptable)? I would use Thunderbird, but I can't figure out to luanch the app with command line arguments and don't to mix my email stuff with the nntp stuff so multiple profiles would be a must. I currently use OE on my win box, but haven't been able to find one for the Mac.

Hello,

For what you describe Thunderbird really does sound like the best fit.

If command line arguments are all that you lack, then perhaps check out these couple of pages and see if that helps you to set-up the command line options you want:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Commandline_arguments%28Thunderbird%29

http://www.mozilla.org/docs/command-line-args.html

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Commandlinearguments

Now, keep in-mind that Thunderbird is just a re-branded / slightly refined version of Mozilla's standard e-mail / news-reader program. So, the Mozilla arguments should work fine with Thunderbird.

But, if you are uncomfortable experimenting with the Thunderbird version, you could go and get the Mozilla version which would be basically the same as Thunderbird (just not with the Thunderbird name).

I hope this helps.

Hello,

Glad you found the links helpful.

A good location to put personal files and such is in the Documents folder on your hard drive. But, anywhere you like is fine. You just need to be able to find them and not have them get mixed-up with other more critical stuff.

Hello,

My guess would be anywhere you want. If you are to call on the file, and it is associated with the proper application, then it should launch the appropriate program automatically when you open that file.

I just experimented by creating a text file on my desktop in plain-text, inserting the sample argument, and then associated that file with Thunderbird. When I double-clicked on the text file, Thunderbird opened only a new mail window (nothing else visible).

So, it would appear that the script worked (although I don't know what it was supposed to do anyway). But, it appeared to call directly on Thunderbird, and did not open the entire program as usual - it only presented a new mail message (like if you were to click on new message).

I hope this helps.
