Q: After upgrading to Yosemite computers on my network are not showing up in shared on finder

Hi Everyone!

I have two mac computers and iMac (early 2009 version) and Mac Book Air (late 2010 version). Both are on the latest version of Yosemite 10.10.

Ever since upgrading my computers to this OS, I noticed that the "Shared"  section of the finder no longer shows the respective other computer. I can get to the computer by "Go/Connect to Server" and typing in the ComputerName.local. I can also control each other's screen by using screen share, but only via iCloud. Airdrop also works, but in case of one computer AirDrop is not listed in Favorites and works only when I have both launch airdrop at the same time.

What's interesting as well is that my Time Capsule does who up on both computers in the "shared" part of the finder.

Both computers' settings in System Preferences/Sharing have not changed since Mountain Lion.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Firewall does not change anything here.

I have 4 Macs: A MacBook Pro, an iMac, a Mac mini server (all three on Yosemite 10.10.2) and a older Mac Mini (the last one with Snow Leopard).

I had problems with the 3 running Yosemite, but after the update to 10.10.2 only the iMac still will disappear after a while.

Switching the sharing options (file or screen sharing) off and back on, makes it visible again for a while, but it'll disappear after a while.

Stopping and restarting iTunes helps for the iTunes home sharing. Again, only for a while.

The Snow Leopard machine is visible always and as of 10.10.2 so are my server and the macbook pro.

I think its a problem with the Yosemite machine(s) not broadcasting their info (bonjour?) and not the actual discovery of the devices....

I just installed the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo update (found here: OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update) even though my iMac had 10.10.2 installed.

That was 10 hours ago and my iMac is still visible, iTunes, File sharing and screen sharing.

    Welcome to the club.

Yosemite as created major havoc on network and wifi issues.

My mac mini will drop of the network when it goes into deep sleep.

The word is it has something to do with Bonjour Sleep Proxy, but to date

Apple has not even punted at a fix for this.

No fix or even a hint of a fix since the launch of YoShitOnMe.   Just various temp workarounds.  The issue is with the Bonjour Sleep Proxy.  It tends to drop Macs out of the shared network , which is funny because my kids windows machine stays on finder despite me having a Mac Router and an iMac and Mac mini that can't stay on.  Anyway for me the only thing that has worked was not letting the Mac Mini go to sleep.  It stays on the network that way.  There are other temp work arounds out there but they did not help me.

Welcome to the new Apple and Good Luck!

Funny enough my iMac shows up on my old (2006) Mini with Snow Leopard but as a Windows (SMB) device?

On my Macbook Pro it is accessible by IP address or FQDN but it's not visible....

BTW I disabled sleep on my iMac ....

My Mac Mini server was ok for quite a long time (several weeks), but started disappearing again since yesterday? The shares, the system, screen sharing and iTunes home sharing ...

It disappears from my other Macs and my iPhone 6+ and iPad air (the remote app can't find iTunes on that Mini anymore)

Same problem on my OS X Server after I updated Yosemite to the last version and no solution so far.

I have 50+ Macs on the network and only the ones that are actively connected to the server (file sharing) are showing up. As noted by others, they appear if I reboot the server, but they will disappear after some time.

Also and for the record, when I updated the server, my git repositories (part of the Xcode Server) where all erased!!! fortunately I have time-machine enable and was able to recover my repos.

It's easier (and probably faster) to disable and then re-enable file sharing instead of rebooting, that will make the server visible again also!

I hope the new OS Update fixes this, it seems to be fixing the wi fi issues.

Sorry, have to add my complain to the list. I'll report the bug to Apple, but it's infuriating.

My problem is I have two office computers and a computer at home.  Sometimes I get to see my remote machines and can connect happily, then for no apparent reason, they disappear.  Yesterday evening, at home, I had both my Mac Pro and my iMac in the office up and connected, this morning I only had my iMac.  In reverse, when I was in the office, my iMac saw the MacBook at home, but the Mac Pro didn't.

Computers eh?  (Actually, the computers are great, it's the humans that program them that ain't so hot...)

    same here.

yosemite is just a mess concerning to network functionality.

smb3 does not what it is supposed to and spits out weird error messages, network shares are not showing up, and that is just the top of the iceberg.

google is full of people complaining and trying to fix apple’s mess. one solution is to completey replace yosemite’s smb implementation. hello incredibles!

but you know what? apple does not seem to give the slightest.

who cares about quality management (as long as iphones are sold)?

thought it could not get worse after mavericks. too bad i seemed to be wrong.

    [speculation mode]
maybe apple encountered that more and more people do use NAS systems which require working network protocols. might not fit the companies itunes and music streaming plans. but that’s really bad thoughts. on the other hand: ever tried to get a daap server running on a different system than itunes?

    [/speculation mode]

Same problem here - This has caused us so many problems with having to go back into the office when it doesn't work. We've given up and started using team viewer which in turn stops working occasionally also. Yet another Yosemite problem that STILL isn't fixed. How can they release an operating system that breaks multiple features and doesn't allow users to downgrade? I thought Jobs always wanted A people working at Apple. Has Apple employed a load of ex Microsoft employees!? Things are going from bad to worse...
