I want to buy a used Mac for video editing and there are alot of them with FCPX and other software already installed. If I buy one of these will I be able to do future updates to the software?
If they were downloaded from the Mac App store, no. In fact, the licenses are not transferable. Technically, it's not legal to sell you the machine with apps from the Mac App store still installed.

How about if the computer came with pre-installed fcpx from the Apple retailer? How are you supposed to upgrade? Thanks
I don't think there is that circumstance. If Apple sells you the machine with software pre-installed, when you initialize the Nachine with your Apple ID that becomes the Aople ID for the App Store and is assigned to the pre-installed software.
I thought that would be the case too, but is not like that. In fact, all these times I was wondering why I never got any FCPX update. I suppose they pre-installed the software with their own ID
all other apps that I bought, will show on the purchased apps, all but FCPX which was the only software pre-installed that I ordered

well, after talking on the phone with the Apple Support they advised me to ask for a Redeem Code to the store where I purchased my iMac. With that code I will be able to download FCPX with my Apple ID and then enjoy future updates.
The reason is that I bought my iMac thru an Authorized Reseller and not an Apple Store..... now will have to wait for a couple of days, but hopefully will be fixed
