Yosemite crashes on gray screen after I enter my password

I’m having serious problems with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) since I upgraded to Yosemite. However I am not entirely sure that it is because of Yosemite. Here is a description of what happens:

  1. I turn on my Mac
  2. The Apple logo briefly appears and then the two user account avatars are shown (me and Guest)
  3. I click on my user account and it takes me to a new screen where I enter my password
  4. I enter my password and there is now a progress bar (which is as slow as mass) underneath my user avatar
  5. Once the progress bar is finished loading I’m taken to a blank gray screen
  6. Nothing happens only I look at this gray screen for ages and eventually my Mac just shuts itself down and restarts

  • I cannot boot in Safe Mode
  • I cannot boot in Recovery Mode
  • I did manage to reset the PRAM but I was still getting the same behaviour that I described above

I also recently had the mother board changed by some Apple “Genius” as I was having problems with the computer shutting itself down while using it, screen freezing and weird graphics behaviour but this seems to be fixed now. I also ran an Apple Hardware Test and it returned no problems.

My Mac starts up every now and then (I’m actually writing this post on my Mac now) but the majority of the time I have the same problem time and time again. Does anybody have similar problems.

Can somebody please help me before I totally go off Apple products.

Thanks :-)

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

if you're on it now go to quit out of everything and go to:

Macintosh HD*:Applications:Utilities:Disk Utility

Click on the Drive name and click "Repair Permissions"

reboot and now do the following to reset your SMC:

Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any/all USB devices (external mouse, keyboard, etc.)

Wait 10 seconds (Mississippi seconds, not those zippy New York ones)

Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button.

Let go of the power button.

Reconnect the mouse and keyboard.

Press the power button to start up your Mac, and reset the NVRAM by holding CMD+OPT+PKEY+RKEY at boot time, waiting until a second startup chime is heard. Repeat twice more (total of 3) then let go.

*or whatever your HD is named.

Thanks for your reply JimmyCMPIT but that didn't work either and now I'm writing on my iPad because my Mac keeps getting stuck at the gray screen. I noticed that before I shut it down this time that Finder kept crashing - when I navigated into folders then it would grind to a halt and that stupid spinning beach ball would appear. What's worse is that I can't even boot into Recovery Mode to wipe my hard drive (which I already did once), it just hangs at the gray screen.

By the way, are these forums that are set up by Apple even looked at by Apple staff? Almost all of the threads I look at are unsolved and there is never any communication coming from Apple. The people who solve the questions are usually regular helpful people.

I really don't want to have to go back to the "Genius" bar. The last time I went they said my computer would be ready in a week and it took close to 3.

a grey screen is the Kernel Stage, you possibly have a bad OS install or your HD may be having an issue.

If your getting past that screen and getting to the login screen it's something else possibly a program trying to load from your accout

Apple Menu>System Preferences>Users and Accounts (Login Items)

or Library

Macintosh HD:Library:Launch Agents

also remove any USB devices outside of your mouse and keyboard, If you're on a laptop disconnect them and reboot.

A bootable disk with Apple First Aid that might have come with your computer is what I would try now.

Apple does NOT look here, that's what I've been told.
