apple support scam

After my safari was frozen with a number to call 18446365433 to fix the virus claiming as apple support, I called. The technician accessed my computer for about 15 minutes or so. I revoked permission afterwards. I realized that he was trying to sell the software from symantec. Was the person able to access all my files on my computer? Should I be worried?

Yes. If you gave them access to your machine, they could have accessed any information that you have on it. Should you be worried? Yes.

They may have installed a key logger or other spyware. The security of your system may have been completely compromised.

I highly recommend you wipe and re-install your machine, then restore your data files from the most recent backup.

If you gave the person access for that amount of time, yes he could get any info on that machine. It would be good to look at System Preferences, Users and Groups and make sure another user account was not created. You may also want to consider reinstalling Mac OS X. And go to Thomas Reed's site http://www.thesafemac.com and check his guidance on protecting yourself.

For the record, Apple NEVER contacts a user in that manner and never requests access to your machine from such a link.

What Mac OS X do you have? If Lion and above restart the Mac holding the Command and R keys. From the drop down utilities select Disk Utility, select the internal drive, the Erase. When that completes Quit DU and select Install Mac OS X. Then go to the apple left side of the menu bar and Restart.

First, though, get an external hard drive and backup your applications and data. Carefully restore specific content so you do not reinstall stuff that may have been placed on your machine.
