I have an iMac 2009 2.66G 2 duo with 4Gb Ram.
I've been running logic 8 since 2009 with no issues, i dodgy download left my mac in a mess so i restored from a back up and now the playhead leaves the sequencer screen blank in play mode, see attached visual.
i upgraded to Yosamite and then reinstalled logic to find it is still the same..
I'm hoping I'm missing something simple, could anyone advise me please?

Logic Pro 8 isn't fully compatible with Mavericks nor Yosemite...
That is why you get the 'Black Bar' issue in the Arrange window...
The only solution is to roll back OS X to Mountain Lion 10.8.4 or earlier..... including Lion or Snow Leopard of course...
What version of OS X did you restore to initially?

I having been running and restored to Snow Leopard. it was after the restore i experienced this issue, it came about after a friend wanted to download some music from some free download site, i noticed the download looked dodgy, since that point my mac ran slow and had pop ups etc.
My concern is the blank screen is apparent in Snow leopard and still in Yosemite and i have reinstalled in both operating systems..
it is confusing. i do wonder if i have not un-installed logic correctly.
You know your stuff, i forgot, i did install mavericks a while back but i did not experience this issue with this operating system until the restore.
So i am guessing i need to either go back to SL, upgrade to LP X or is there someway of correcting the problem??

Firstly, You are welcome!
Unfortunately, there is no known fix for this issue.... (LP8 and the Black bar issue under modern OS X versions...)
So, yes, you can either roll back to Snow Leopard and use LP8 (My personal suggestion)
or...
Upgrade to LPX (Be prepared for some other possible performance issues with LPX under Yosemite... better to use LPX and Mavericks at this time though that's not perfect either...)

I was hoping there would be a patch, thinking about it the issues i have had with the software and my iPhone recently it makes sense to go back. think i might look at investing in a new system at some point but may go back to PC as Apple seems to be loosing its edge over the past couple of years..

I have the same problem with Yosemite and Logic Pro 9 (i checked but there were no updates for logic pro 9)
what to do?... go back to which OS to for this combination OS/software?
(i'ld rather not pay for an 'upgrade' to Logix Pro X)

Make sure you are running the latest version of LP9 which is v9.1.8
if not thats your problem and there is an update available......
That's odd.. The 'Black Bar' problem has only previously been reported to occur with Mavericks and now Yosemite.... certainly not in SL.... so i have no idea why/how you had that issue under SL..
