My Mac recently began running very slow.

My Mac recently began running very slow. I recently loaded Yosemite; could that be the problem?

Sure would appreciate any suggestions on how to get my Mac back up to speed.

You have a lot of total garbage loaded on your computer including MacKeeper which is considered Malware. In addition you installed Tuneupmymac which should also be uninstalled! DO NOT install any antivirus, performance enhancing, cleaning, or other garbage on your iMac. OS X does not need them, those types of apps tend to create more problems for OS X than then they solve. In your case I would start by uninstalling MacKeeper and then see if some of the performance returns.

If you continue to have problems, I would do a total erase and install and reinstall OS X and then restore your data. Then manually install your apps.

Before taking that route please post another EtreCheck report and we can check to see if you got rid of all the malware you installed.

OK, it looks like you got rid of MacKeeper & Tuneupmymac however your system is still starved for RAM. Look at all the login items & Internet Plugins you have installed. At this point I would recommend using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used to determine what activities are using all of your RAM and address those activities.

Nov 15, 2014 10:49 AM in response to Derfyef

You still have TuneUpMyMac listed in your login items:

TuneupMyMac UNKNOWN (missing value)

Check your login items settings in the System/Users & Groups preference pane and see if it's there. To verify you've removed all of the TuneUpMyMac files download and run Find Any File to search for any files with "TuneUpMyMac'" in the file name.

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages and can find invisible files.

Even though they are not currently running, remove the wdc softwtre that came with your Passport. Their software has caused me nothing but grief on several Macs of different models and vintages,

Also I would offer a dissenting opinion that you are NOT starved for RAM. More is always better but Etrecheck show only a meager 290 MB page-outs comported to over 30 GB (30,110MB) page-ins. That's only 0.9 percent, well below the level of swapping that indicates an immediate need for more RAM. Normally we start thinking about adding RAM when the page-outs are 10-25 percent of page-ins. You are far from that threshold.

Try a restart. Your computer has a 3-day uptime showing. A restart may make some of the dreck you tried to remove disappear

Now that the holidays are over I can get back to the problem of my slow Mac. I have been reviewing procedures for erasing my hard drive, clean install of OS X and restoring data from Time Machine. It says to start by performing an erase on my start-up disk. Which of the following should I erase and what are the other folders/files?

500.11 GBSampsung...

Macintosh HD

SuperDrive

Sure appreciate your help and any further guidance you might offer to help solve my problem.

My Mac recently began running very slow.
