Assuming that you're running Yosemite, the only OS I've ever seen display that problem, boot into recovery mode, and reinstall the OS. Provide the OS specifics.

Unfortunately I'm running Snow Leopard. Intel i5, 8 GB RAM, ATI HD6770 1GB.
Since the iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program isn't applicable, then a trip to an Apple repair station is in order.
