when does a long text become an mms rather than an sms?

When the text includes "media" such as a photo, music, sound file, etc.

That's what i thought, but i have been charged for an mms rather than inclusive sms by my provider.
It was atext only, no pics or sound files, but was quite long.
have been separately told if over 160 characters could then be converted to an mms.
have you heard that?
Normally, if a text is over 160 characters, the text message will be broken into 2 or more messages, but will not be converted to MMS.
