Apple mail app on my Macbook Pro continually disconnects from my gmail.

The fix for this cannot be continually be removing and reconnecting the gmail account. I've done this a couple of times but the problem always returns. I can receive email but not send. This is a new phenomena to me, having not occurred until I changed the password on my gmail account. And yes, I updated the password appropriately in the mail app. Help!
