Q: Mac Mail re-sort loses selected eMail

Perhaps I am not doing something correctly, but here is what I am seeing.

Problem started with upgrade to Yosemite.

I have my Mail Inbox sorted to display each eMail line by Date Received.

If I get an eMail from someone and I want to see the previous eMails sent by that person, I have simply select the current eMail from that person and then sorted the eMail list based upon the From column.

Before Yosemite, the eMail list would sort and the selected record would remain visible, and all the previous eMails from that person would be shown in adjacent records.

Since Yosemite, the eMail list will sort, but the visible records are the ones at the bottom of the eMail list--in other words I see eMails from people starting with the letter "Z".

Yosemite's Mail seems to have lost the ability to "bookmark" the record I was on and shift the view of eMail records to that selected bookmark.

Did a search here but did not find this issue referenced.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but try Mail/Preferences/View/View Conversations and check include related messages.

    Eric, thanks for responding.

I am aware of the "Conversation" functionality that you reference, but I do not like its behavior, so I have not turned it on. Instead, I am using the plain old Mail functionality. If you use plain old Mail functionality, each eMail is independent, and that's fine.

Now, sometimes I get an eMail from someone, and I remember that I got an eMail from that person long ago (maybe on a different topic), and I want to see all of that person's previous eMails.

Remember, I have the current eMail selected in my Inbox listing of eMails.

Now, I go to the "From" heading in that Inbox list of eMails and the list of eMails resorts by the "From" data--I see all the eMails from each person listed right next to each other.

Prior to Yosemite, the moment I clicked that "From" heading, the Inbox eMail list would re-sort AND the view of that list would show the eMails from the person who's eMail I had originally selected. In other words, if I had originally been looking at an eMail from Jeff Johns, when I clicked on the "From" heading, I would now see all the eMails from Jeff Johns, all listed right next to each other.

Since installing Yosemite, when I click on the "From" heading, the Inbox eMail list re-sorts BUT I am now viewing all the From addresses starting with the letter 'Z'. In other words, Mail resorts the display, but places the view of records at the end of the recordset, rather than resetting the view on the record that I had previously selected.

I know there are a dozen ways to get the result I am looking-for. But I know that all those ways involve far more typing and clicking that the simple, one-click methodology that I have always used, that got screwed-up with Yosemite.

I am having this same issue.  When it re-sorts by sender name, rather than keeping the scroll position on the selected record, it jumps to the top, which is the last Z or the first A.  Like you, I want it to keep the scroll position on my selected record.

Did you ever find a way to get this working?

Have the same problem. Really miss this function, used it all the time. In my opinion, without holding the "bookmark" the "sort by" function is almost useless. You just get a huge list that you have to manually search / scroll through. Might as well use the search function from the start.  Hope it gets fixed.

As a followup, I found other threads, and according to Apple support staff who spoke to development, the new functionality is intentional.  I went to apple's feedback page and submitted a request to make this a configurable setting, which should not be hard to do.  I recommend you do the same.

Ugh. However, as a workaround, try the resort, then hit the up or down arrow once. That should change the focus to the message before or after the one you had currently selected, so at least moves you to the right ballpark.

Tim, GREAT find. Not the ideal fix, but will suffice. Thanks.

NCIceman, thanks for your input. Boy, if this new behavior is intentional, I'd have to ask Apple, "what is the advantage of this changed methodology?"

Usually, if you make an intentional change, and it screw-up something, there's usually a benefit to offset that screw-up. I can't see the benefit here.

I have also been greatly annoyed by the lost functionality, which I can not understand, since only the focus on the selected email must be maintained.

And I also do not see any benefit in giving up this functionality.

Thank you, Timothy for the way out!

I still hope that Apple will restore the lost functionality.

Well, it looks like Apple listened!  Mail resorts have started behaving the old way; I guess it was a fix in 10.10.1. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry for the false alarm.  It appeared to work a couple of times for me, then stopped.  Not sure what happened; perhaps the other message that matched the subject was already on the same page.

Having exact same problem Thought I was going mad. Hope this gets solved asap. How can lost functionality ever be an improvement?
