Q: Mac Mail re-sort loses selected eMail

Perhaps I am not doing something correctly, but here is what I am seeing.

Problem started with upgrade to Yosemite.

I have my Mail Inbox sorted to display each eMail line by Date Received.

If I get an eMail from someone and I want to see the previous eMails sent by that person, I have simply select the current eMail from that person and then sorted the eMail list based upon the From column.

Before Yosemite, the eMail list would sort and the selected record would remain visible, and all the previous eMails from that person would be shown in adjacent records.

Since Yosemite, the eMail list will sort, but the visible records are the ones at the bottom of the eMail list--in other words I see eMails from people starting with the letter "Z".

Yosemite's Mail seems to have lost the ability to "bookmark" the record I was on and shift the view of eMail records to that selected bookmark.

Did a search here but did not find this issue referenced.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

It's not working for me but I appreciate the up-arrow down-arrow solution.

My goodness you're articulate ktemkin!  I am having the same problem - it's driving me crazy. I was going to try to post the question, but couldn't figure out how to word it.  Thank you for explaining it so thoroughly.  I look forward to the solution.  I actually switched to another computer just to delete emails because I couldn't deal with it in Yosemite.

Every time MAC OS is updated some important functionality such as this is eliminated. I'm so sick of it. Why would anyone think the new system is an improvement? Every update adds extra clicks to some simple function from earlier. It's a continual downhill slide toward gimmicks over function.

This must be the worst function screw-up in a long time. I used this feature daily. The other day I happened to do some more purchasing in a local Apple Store ... so I asked about this. The Apple Genius replied "it's easy ... all you have to do is to type the name into the search field. See?" Right. When I asked what benefit I get to see who is at the end of my email view alphabetically ... every time I'd click on the "From" column, she had no answer. Yup, so now, every time I want to check who is at the end of my sender list, all I have to do is to click on the column. Yeah, Zdeno Chara is still there. Every time. Good to know.

I am finding this has been partially fixed. However not 100%.

When i reboot the computer i find the functionality works correctly as it did before Yosimite. However after a while of use (not sure how long will try to pay attention) it suddenly stops working and reverts back to how it was when yosimite was first released (as described by OP). I don't know if it is some trigger I have done or just time, but without question there is still a bug there that has not been fixed.

Is anyone else still experiencing this problem, or has it been fixed for you all?

Being a heavy email user i do not use "group conversations" and retain Classic layout

I am currently on Yosemite 10.10.3

Did you find an answer to your question? I have the same problem since I updated to Yosemite. I guess it is a problem with the OS.

I understand exactly what you mean. I used to do the same and it was so easy to find previos emails, not anymore. Thanks

Hey! It just went away; I set sort to Date, selected a message (in middle of sort order), and changed sort to From, and the selection stayed with the originally selected message. Yet just earlier, it worked the stupid way (thus prompting my posting). What gives? There must be some trigger(s) that toggle the "feature" on and off. Will experiment some more.

I'm running 10.10.4 and the problem still exists and is really annoying.  Occasionally, it'll work the way it's supposed to, but most of the time when I click "From" it sorts the messages in alphabetical order starting with either A or Z.  The only solution I've found is to enter the person's address in the Search box and then it will list all the email from that address.

Has anyone figured out why the sort works correctly every once in a blue moon but not regularly? (It can't possibly be an intentional feature if the behavior is inconsistent.) The up/down arrow key trick is a good workaround, but the screw up with sorting in Yosemite is maddening.

    It's fixed in El Capitan.

Is this still working for you?  I just tried it for the first time, but doesn't seem to be working for me.
