Ipod Nano - Upgraded iTunes will not allow changes

Hello,

I have the 1st generation iPod Nano which I frequently connect to my Mac when I change my playlists or add music. My Mac recently updated the iTunes to the newest version and now I'm having troubles with the iPod connection.

Specifically, when I plug in the iPod it sync's with iTunes and I can visually see all my songs and playlists. However, everything is greyed out. When I click on a song or playlist it does not allow me to make any changes. Including creating a new playlist or modifying a current one. It did however add new songs to the iPod through the sync.

Do you know how I would go about removing the restriction so I could edit or create new playlists?

Thanks!

Roz

If the greyed out songs are on the iPod (when you look at it in iTunes), I think that is normal IF doing a sync adds new songs to the iPod. That means you are using automatic syncing to load content, not the Manually manage music setting. When you use automatic syncing, you cannot update what is on the iPod directly, which is why the songs are not accessible on the iPod (greyed out). Instead, you update your iTunes library, and iTunes updates the iPod automatically, based on how you have the iPod's Music syncing screen set up.

If you want to update the iPod directly, you need to set it to Manually manage music. That setting is on the iPod's Summary settings screen, which is the screen you see when you select the iPod in iTunes (click on the "device button" in iTunes 12). But if you do that, iTunes will no longer sync changes to the iPod automatically.
