Since upgrading to Yosemite my computer (iMac late 2012 model) closes down instead of going to sleep. When I restart I get a message saying "your computer shut down because of a problem". Does anyone have similar problem? What is the solution?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
As far as I can tell, there is nothing labelled Diagnostic and usage messages or information under Utilities. I did take copies of the reports that appeared when I opened the machine again and they are attached (I hope that is what you mean by “posting the entire contents”. I took three copies in case there were different causes, but as far as I can tell they are all the same. I hope you can help.

OK, that has worked apparently, but I can’t do without WiFi or USB devices, so where to from here?
Turn Wi-Fi back on and test again. If the panic isn't reproduced, reconnect the USB devices one at a time, testing after each one.
OK, I turned WiFi back on and now it is playing up again. It is still communicating with my iPad, so do I need to have WiFi on??

If it still connects to the network with Wi-Fi off, that means you're on Ethernet (wired networking.) In that case, you don't need Wi-Fi. However, a hardware fault is probably causing the panics, so turning off Wi-Fi is only a workaround, not a solution. The solution would be to take the machine in for repair.
Why would a hardware fault coincide with upgrading to Yosemite?

A fault that was latent before may become active after a system upgrade because the new system uses the hardware differently.
