Q: Safari won't fully load pages

I have a macbook pro and am operating OS X Yosemite version 10.10. I have safari version 8.0 and it has stopped loading pages. It is intermittent when it won't load anything, not even google.com or other search engines, the progress bar only goes part way and then stalls. I am unsure of what to do.

Same here, The progress bar gets around one fifth of the way and just stops, sometimes pressing x and refreshing works sometimes not.

Firefox loads the same pages instantly.

Go step by step and test.

    1. Power cycle

Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.

         It will take a   while.

         Restart the computer.

         Start up in Safe Mode

         http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11212

    2 Empty Caches

        Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

    3. Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and all other website data:

Press “Remove All Website Data” button

    4. Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.

        Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Turn extensions on one by one to test

I'm having the same issue. I don't know if its a coincidence, but most of the sites I'm having issues with are google related (www.google.com, www.youtube.com) or sites that use google syndication. Any of these sites open instantly with firefox, so it's specific to Safari.

Thanks for the reply. Tried everything but the safe start, it's not the router, firefox is working fine side by side, nor is it DNS ditto, nor is it cookies or caches, cleared. Also tried on guest account. It's Safari having problems with certain sites.

    I uninstalled Flash :http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html#main_u ninstall

I don't think it should make difference especially to the Apple site but things seem better afterwards.

I have had the same problem a few times since installing Yosemite. Very frustrating but it is good to always have an extra browser or two as backup. There are also other threads about this problem, so apparently something to be fixed by Apple. I got Safari working again by:

    1) Empy and delete Safari Cache:

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.

    Click:   Remove All Website Data

    Then delete the cache.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

    2) Disabling IP6:

System Preferences -> Network then choose Advanced... -> TCP/IP

under Configure IPv6 choose Link-local only

    3) Restart

Thanks I've changed the IP6 setting and after restart things on first look appear to have improved.

Clearing the caches seems to have worked for me.

Sad but true, I couldn't load this page:

OS X Yosemite: If you can’t share computer screens

Don't delete all your history just yet.

Try the least destructive steps first.

    Happy Day!

I have another possible (and much simpler) solution someone else suggested in a different forum. Simply turn Wi-Fi off then on again. No restart required or empying cache etc. It seems like the issue happens after the computer sleeps. I had tried the other solutions already but the problem happened AGAIN this morning. Simply turning Wi-Fi off then on worked this time!

It may help some people but I use an Apple extreme connected via an ethernet cable.

After over a day using Safari switching the IP6 setting detailed above has did the trick for me.

There were some sites that would not even load that now load without any delay. Thanks.

This definitely appears to be a Safari issue as I can get to any page I wish using Chrome or Firefox when this issue is occurring in Safari, so it's NOT a network issue. Rebooting routers etc. is not needed and won't correct it. Eventually Safari does end up loading pages, even after I've done nothing to correct the issue (clearing cache, turning off WiFi, etc).

OK so I have had several more times that the page won't load at all.

I turned all extensions off and it still won't load this page:

OS X Mavericks: Narrow down Spotlight search results

The page loads fine in Chrome and Firefox.

So when Safari won't load an apple web page you know they are going down the wrong path there at apple.

This and the latest version of Pages bombs on my iMac all the time.

    It's pretty sad.

    And pretty irritating.

I guess I am going to have to consider switching default browsers again.

    stewcamp:

Your second suggestion worked perfectly for me, without a reboot. As soon as I set IPv6 to link-local and applied the change, Safari started functioning correctly.

    2) Disabling IP6:

System Preferences -> Network then choose Advanced... -> TCP/IP

under Configure IPv6 choose Link-local only

    Thanks for the tip.
