I see that apache.org have a newer version, 2.4.10, than the 2.2.24 that came with my 10.6.8. They have downloadable binaries for Win32 and Netware(?), but not Mac. Is upgrading apache within 10.6.8 a practical possibility?

Yes, it's perfectly possible. If you have no need specifically for 2.4.x, I can easily walk you through the process for updating to the latest 2.2.x release(2.2.29)
While you're there you should also update OpenSSL and OpenSSH
You'll need XCode installed to proceed.
How familiar are you with compiling binaries from source via terminal?
Apache 2.4 in 10.6.8?
