Apple Pay comes on at TSA when scanning Passbook boarding pass

This issue has happened to myself and another gentleman on FlyerTalk.com. At LGB airport (maybe others?) when you try to scan your boarding pass with Passbook, the scanner is triggering Apple Pay to come up. So every time the phone gets near the scanner, your credit card pops up.

Happened during my last trip departing LGB today.

With my iPhone 6 and a passbook e-boarding pass, when I placed my phone on the TSA scanner, Apple Pay kept on turning on until I held the iPhone several (maybe 4-6) inches above the scanner.

Was confused the first few times thinking I accidentally swiped the passbook.

Are the TSA scanners NFC enabled? The Desko Penta scanners have NFC optional, maybe the TSA scanners have NFC.

Has anyone else had this issue?

U.S. passports have an RFID chip in them. RFID and NFC are similar but not identical technologies. If the scanners are also used for scanning passports, then they would at least have RFID scanners. That may be enough to make the iPhone think it's near an NFC terminal.

I'd suggest submitting feedback to Apple :

Best of luck.

I just had a similar issue boarding on a United flight. Every time I would put my iPhone near their self boarding check in, it would bring up my apple pay, not allowing me to board. I first was using passbook, then I tried the United app, but Apple pay overrides all that. I finally had to actually pull out a paper copy, which fortunately I printed beforehand otherwise I wouldn't have been able to board without getting out of line and talking to a customer service rep. This needs to be addressed by Apple otherwise I'm turning off Apple pay since I use mobile boarding passes a lot more than Apple pay.

I had this happen to me on Monday (11/24) while flying out of Logan Airport in Boston. Whenever my phone came near the TSA reader, my phone demanded that I make a purchase and blocked the scanner from using my phone. I even tried taking a screen-grab of the boarding pass, so I would be showing a photo of the board pass (rather than using the Passbook App). No luck. As soon as my phone came anywhere near the TSA reader, my phone will bring up a credit card purchase attempt - preventing the reader from seeing my boarding pass. I was only able to proceed, after deleting my credit card from Apple Pay to prevent it. No Apple Pay for me until a fix is issued.

SSimpler workaround... Just scan your fingerprint. No transaction will occur and your phone will resume allowing the boarding pass to scan. I just ran into this problem in FLL. Got nervous because I didn't know what to do next when it kept coming up. TSA insisted it was an ad on my phone and said they don't have NFC. I suspect they just didn't know. I told them It was apple pay and I scanned my fingerprint. It unlocked and that was that. Close call.
