The grid usually will appear, if the location is out in the nowhere and you you zoomed in too far for details.
When I enter the same place name, I will see this:
Try to click the Hybrid button, to see the satellite view. This will tell you, if have accidentally redefined "Westhampton Beach" to a place in a different location.

I can't see anything, zoom in or out, all hybrid, etc.
I am connected to the internet.

Sometimes a firewall, like Little Snitch is blocking the access to the Map server, even if you are connected to the Internet.
I you cannot see any locations at all restart your mac in Safe Mode and try again. You Mac will need a long time to start up and be slower, but this will tell you, if have problematic software installed. See:

and I don't have little snitch, but I did just install Avasti virus protection.
I just uninstalled it, and rebooted.
Now I have the maps!
So then it is something in Avasti I believe.
