File Sharing on OS 9.2.1

I need some one to step me thru File Sharing between two Computers running OS 9.2.1.
One is a G3 Wallstreet, the other a G3 500 iBook.
I've been able to go into the Chooser and select File Sharing in AppleTalk on both and have a Crossover ethernet cable connecting the two built in ethernet plugs. But I get hung up on the IP Addresses and how to find them.
Also password and security access to down load files from one computer to the other as I'm trying to move everything on one hard drive to the other.
Trying to learn this so I can help my father out as well as he moves to a faster computer with OS X but thats anoterh story.
Thaks

Hi, ReComp -

You may find some usable info in this Apple KBase article -
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=11368

Note, too, that even after the connection is set up, you will not be able to share files until you have desigated appropriate folders (or the entire drives) as being shared. This can be done via the Sharing menu item in the Get Info window for an item (folder or volume).

I'll give a try... at this point, you have the two Mac connected with the crossover Ethernet cable and both Macs are on.

(1) Make sure the Mac to be shared (accessed) has file sharing turned ON. Appropriately, you do this in the File Sharing control panel. In this control panel, you can also set the Owner Name, password, and Computer Name. You do not need to start Program Linking. You can start file sharing on both Macs or just one.

(2) Open the TCP/IP control panel on the Mac to be shared. The standard setting is Connect via "Ethernet" and Configure "Using DHCP Server." Where it says "IP Address:," note the IP address. Most likely, it will be something like 192.168.1.101 (the last digit could be 2). This is the IP address of the shared Mac.

(3) Open Chooser on the Mac that will accessing the shared Mac (the other one). Click on AppleShare icon. On the right side of the window, you may already see the shared Mac, by the Computer Name from (1). If so, double click on it to be prompted to enter your user name and password. This is the Owner Name and password from (1). If the Computer Name does not appear, click "Server IP Address..." button. Enter the exact IP address from (2) and click Connect button. Using either method, you should get a listing of volumes available on the shared Mac. Select one, and it should appear as a network volume icon on the Mac.

(4) You can share in the opposite direction if sharing is enabled on both Macs.

Rather than using Chooser, you can uses Network Browser. By default, it should be available under the Apple menu. It has more features than Chooser (which was originally intended as a way to select printers), but it does the same thing in simple situation. You can browse for the shared Mac, or you can enter the specfic IP address.

Once you confirm that the connection works, you can do more advances things like set up user accounts on the shared Mac. That way, the user accessing the shared Mac can log in as someone other than "owner" and have more limited access rights. But that's probably another topic.

NOTE: You mentioned AppleTalk. If you share using Ethernet, I don't think it will be necessary to make AppleTalk active.
