Piggy backing/Daisy Chaining

Is it possible to 'piggy back' or 'daisy chain' a HD to a camera to a laptop...or a camera to a HD to a laptop in order to log and capture directly onto the HD if the HD and the laptop only have 1 firewire port each?

iBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just my two cents worth: I shoot with a Sony HVR A1U on the road and firewire it (FW800) into my portable hard drive (Smartdisc FireLite 80GB) which is ported into my PowerBook G4 through the FW800 port.

I read somewhere that this is not recommended but I read it after I tried it (I was originally going to port my camera into the G4 through FW400 instead of daisy-chaining through the Smartdisc FireLite, but I forgot to bring the cable).

The whole thing worked fine for me - I captured hours of footage (HD downconverted to SD) this way.

But don't blame me if you try this and your system fries 😟
