Is it possible to 'piggy back' or 'daisy chain' a HD to a camera to a laptop...or a camera to a HD to a laptop in order to log and capture directly onto the HD if the HD and the laptop only have 1 firewire port each?
So my theory is that you are running from cam to HD through mac. But the issue is that you don't have enough ports. There is no way to daisy chain without more ports. They don't have 800?
Pick yourelf up a belkin firewire hub. And problem solved
Just my two cents worth: I shoot with a Sony HVR A1U on the road and firewire it (FW800) into my portable hard drive (Smartdisc FireLite 80GB) which is ported into my PowerBook G4 through the FW800 port.
I read somewhere that this is not recommended but I read it after I tried it (I was originally going to port my camera into the G4 through FW400 instead of daisy-chaining through the Smartdisc FireLite, but I forgot to bring the cable).
The whole thing worked fine for me - I captured hours of footage (HD downconverted to SD) this way.
But don't blame me if you try this and your system fries 😟
