iCal Daily Alert Problem

I recently started having a problem using iCal. All was working well until I synced it with my iphone. What happened is that despite having event alerts off in the preferences and for the calendars as well, suddenly they all were giving me daily alerts. For instance, my holidays calendar notified me that tomorrow is Veteran's Day despite the fact I have that calendar set to ignore alerts. When I checked the calendar, ALL DAY entries now override the alerts off. Kind of ***** and wondering how best to proceed. I took off the calendars, restarted and reloaded the calendars fresh. But they came back with the daily alerts back on and the only way to turn it off is manually, which is a problem if you have daily events in your calendar you do not need to be alerted to! Any help will be appreciated.
