safari mplayerx or mediadownloader corrupted safari

You downloaded a Trojan masquerading as the MPlayerX app, which no one really needs in the first place.

Download and run Adware Medic.

i'm sitting here with the "you must install MplayerX " on my screen. Can't do anything with Safari. I have rebooted my MacBook, but it still pops up. am I ok if I download it and immediately dispose of the dmg file immediately, or does this thing self start?

Yours was different. One of many scam pages that use a flaw in Safari to lock it to a web page. You can't even get at the menu bar. But you already figured out how to defeat it. 🙂

Thanks Kurt. Still looks like it's worthwhile for me to get the Adaware application for future trials of this sort.

AdwareMedic won't help with that since it's not adware. It's a JavaScript trick that locks Safari to a page or popup. It seems to particularly attack Safari since from what I've seen so far, it's the only browser that not only gets stuck to the page, but you can't even open the preferences to temporarily turn JavaScript off. Which all that needs to be done to back out of the page, or close the tab. But a few months back, these scum figured out a way to block access to the menu bar from Safari. They can still be rather easily defeated, but not as easy as before.

Try quitting Safari, then while holding down the shift key, reopen it.
